I found this thread whilst searching for a Mershon Pad. In Madis' "The Winchester Book" there is an illustration of a M71 with a factory installed Pachmayr ventilated pad (p. 320). It does not appear to be very well fitted, in that the toe line of the pad is not a continuation of the bottom line of the stock.

The caption on the photo states, in part: "..Pachmayr made recoil pads for Winchester, and some of their pads will be found on the model 71."

Not everything we read in Madis should be taken as fact.

True, everything should be verified. Are you indicating that Winchester never used Pachmayr pads, in spite of the Madis comment?

Eightbore hit that nail square on the head. Still, it is an admirable work in many, if not most, regards.

On the white line thing, one has to wonder if it was not in part based on the spats from an earlier era, a sign of class as in dressed to the 'nines', smart & stylish. White wall tires were a way of calling added attention to the common rides during the depression era and afterwards though they too were from an earlier time and sent a connotative message of 'expensive'; actually quite inexpensive in the scheme of things & dressy. Its called 'Retro' styling today, on M/C's anyway. Weatherby also was into the white line motif and undoubtedly some influence transferred or kept the interest there anyway through the 50's & beyond. Gunsmiths got a little extra for installing a white line spacer pad on guns, whether considered blasphemous, classy or be-bopper cool. I wish they still made the 'Pigeon' pads.

Someday whiteline pads will be held in high regard as part of a vintage era...along with Cutts Compensators.

Chuck, you are a visionary. I am presently not automatically replacing pre 1950s Mershon pads with Silvers and repro Silvers and Hawkins pads on classic guns. I have always appreciated and shot Cutts guns which sell for much less than non Cutts guns that shoot the same.

I'm always fascinated when I see a nice M12 with a cutts out at the range. I don't see many of them any more. Most have been cut off or the barrels replaced. If I had one, I'd leave it be.

My fave M12 w/ factory Cutts was a bit short so I spaced out the pad w/ three B/W spacers. Totally Kool.

Hate to admit it, but I have 12 gauge Model 12 retrofit and original Cutts guns in about every style of rib they put on them, as well as Model 42 retrofit Cutts gun in several variations. I also have a Parker SC grade single trap with Cutts and am considering building a .410 Krieghoff with a pair of Cutts Compensators. I have the gun, the barrels, and the 2 Cutts bodies. All I need is to find a machinist who can turn and thread my adapter rings.

Bill, with that K-gun double Cutts 410 you'd be in rarified air.
