I am about to rebuilt the interior of a safe to be used only for my doubles. I had been intending to store butt up.

To avoid GLS's concern about the liner being a repository of moisture and encouraging rust at the muzzle I had been considering having them rest directly on wood.

Any thoughts? Does any one else have the muzzles on wood?

Nothing is as attractive as a row of nice guns behind glass, and standing butt down. Butt up may be good for the gun, but it sure looks funny.

Has anyone on this forum actually had a stock deteriorate due to one of their guns being stored butt down? I have guns that have been stored that way for over 40 years without any type of problems whatsoever.

Depends on the wood and how it is finished. Some woods have tannins that could damage the muzzles, and almost all wood will absorb moisture from the air but probably not enough to cause a problem. You could eliminate any possible issues by using plastic, such as strips cut from a polyethylene kitchen cutting board or from a lumber substitute such as Azek Trim Board.

Nice display Doug:
But this has always looked awkward to me. I've been in W L Moore's showroom on numerous occasions. All their guns are on display butt down.

When I rebuilt the interior of my safe I raised the floor above the door frame using plywood covered in this. Works well.
