Greener says butt down

"Guns are best kept put together and placed butt down on a gun rack in a glass case or gun cupboard"

I always heard butt up blush

Elmer Keith, the noted gun writer, used to advocate storing your guns butt up. His reasoning was to prevent excess oil from flowing into the stock and damaging the wood. My practical approach here was to just use less oil.

Not only does butt up prevent excess oil from seeping in to the stock head, but it also prevents recoil pads from collapsing and deteriorating.

Butt up . The oil soaking makes sense plus I have a couple of guns where the recoil pads were all misformed and cracked from being stored butt down.

Nothing like a beautiful butt. Mine are stored up.

My guns are properly stored butt down, but they're protected with Eezox---so there's never any worry of problems caused by oil-based products.

When possible, butt up. Room in the safe is the determining factor on all but double guns, which are stored butt up. I have concerns on occasion of the barrel ends sitting on the safe's liner material being hygroscopic, but so far, so good. The relative humidity is about 50% in the safe.
