Its a fine london twist barrel 11-gage Birmingham variety and is in fine shape considering born on date is circa 1850 - 1875 time frame.

nipples are plugged but i will clear them out and try to get an idea of inner bore condition..

The hammers lock very crisp..

looking foreward to bringing it back to life along with a cap and ball tiger wood stock rifle that goes with it..

Don,
Read Krakow Kid's above. If you're planning on shooting the gun you'll want to take the barrels off to clean it after shooting. Purchase a Dixie Gun Works catalogue ($5). Not only do they sell every kind of replacement part imagineable (including percussion nipples) but the manual (at least my 2004 addition) has a 52 page General Information section that gives all types of information about vintage guns, including load data, build dates, tons of good stuff. Other sources for parts are Track of the Wolf, and The Possible Shop. Wads can be inexpensively purchased from Circle Fly Wads.

There you are Don, now how about those pictures, inquiring minds want to see this bad boy of yours (along with the rifle).

I have a shiny polished aluminum disc .40 diameter that I picked up at a gun show. I drop that into the bore and shine a flashlight down, and you can see pits and whatever quite well

Mike - What a great idea, somebody had their thinking cap on when they came up with that "tool". It couldn't have been expensive to make or to buy, I'm guessing. Its utility in checking muzzleloading barrels must be tremendous.

Yes, it is a handy piece of kit and I don't know how otherwise you would check the barrel, an opticla bore scopr would be OK but how many of us can afford one of those?

Mike,
What a good idea! I currently use a skinny little (single AAA battery) flashlight I drop down the barrel. It's about .45" in diameter and 3"s long, of course you can't see the chamber area with it.

My F.W. Harrold is an 11 ga. I used it last weekend at a muzzle loading shoot for trap. It works well with 2 3/4 dram charge of 777 ff powder and an ounce and 1/8th of shot, a square load. It performs nicely.
