Has anyone done this? What type of ounce reduction was achieved? Thanks.

Boring out the buttstock to balance the gun is very common. By the same token I have a high grade Scott that had weight added to the butt. I think most stock hollowing will cut 3 to 5 ounces from weight--varies according to density of wood, amount of drilling, etc. Really doesn't weaken the stock any if properly done.

I seem to recall a Techicana article by McIntosh and Trevallion where they said they were able to remove up to 10 oz. of weight, depending on what Joe said, the density of the wood and the amount of drilling.

Joe in Charlotte has shown photos on this forum of his lightweight Turner that was made with wood removed from the sides of the stock. It is a very interesting and desirable Damascus barreled lightweight 12 gauge English gun from the 19th Century. Search for the thread on his Grouse hunt in Scotland.

Guy, I think it's very important to keep the balance of the gun foremost in your mind. If the gun is butt heavy then hollowing it makes sense. Otherwise, you just might end up with a real muzzle heavy shotgun. Just about everything is a tradeoff....

I have always admired the lightweight Turner guns. Maybe someone could try that system on another make of gun to test the weight reduction.

Answer is ,yes I have . How much will depend entirely on the specific gun amd more importantly the wood. Some wood can weigh considerably moer than other pieces of similar size . All down to grain density ,it is often a case of start and see .

Guy: In London's best shops, the last two things they teach an apprentice are chequering and stock boring -- because both are so easily mucked up, and rarely fixable.
