JayCee; Yes, that's it.
I grin when I remember a guy with an A-5 that had red rust bloom on the receiver. He came into the store with some friends and asked it there was anything that would take it off. I said "I'll be right back; grabbed a stainless sponge, some rem-oil, and a paper towel. I walked out, sprayed the gun with the oil, rubbed it with the sponge while the owner absolutely cringed. I wiped it off with the paper towel and said "there you go." He was amazed.

When the rust is too thick and stubborn to take off with any of the methods mentioned, I have had good results wet sanding---slowly and gently---with oil and 2,000 grit automotive sandpaper, which you can get from NAPA or any other auto supply store.

While all these methods may work fine and good, I assume they MUST be for use on SOMEONE ELSE'S gun, right? One would NEVER let one's personal gun rust, would one?

Stan - Somebody else's gun that I'm considering purchasing.

NEVER on my guns. If I ever found any rust on the clean guns I own I'd go insane with the guilt. They'd have to cart me off to the booby hatch.

Now that's an old phrase I haven't used in decades. Booby hatch. Is anyone else familiar with that?

Sam, thanks for the heads up.

I remember some time ago someone mentioning brake fluid instead of oil to remove rust.
Anyone know what the advantage of that would be?

Ever see a stream of orange-red rust? Normal at end of each season when my inshore fishermen neighbours cleaned their guns. My nearest neighbour I remember in particular because he had a DH Parker. I don't know how he got it; a question a kid wouldn't ask even among honest men in those times of subsistence living. The head of the stock/action was placed in a jug of gasoline. Somehow that kept it going because 70 years later it's (damascus) in the hands of his grandson, one of the finest gunners for miles around.

King,
I remember several years ago you lost several of your guns into saltwater and weren't able to retrieve them for several months. Have you been having rust problems since from the saltwater soaked stocks?

Here you go, from http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2038/whats-the-origin-of-booby-trap
The phrase "booby hatch" was greatly popularized by Milt Gross (1895-1953), best known today for the "Nize Baby" stories. One of his Sunday comic strips (from 1929-1934) was called "Count Screwloose of Toolose" and depicted a chronic escapee from an insane asylum (Nuttycrest) who spent the day being horrified by the antics of the "normal" folks, and in the last panel was seen hurrying back to the asylum muttering, "Back to the dear old booby hatch."

Steve, can you imagine somebody trying to get something like that out in a popular medium these days? How many politically correct sins did he make?

"Count Screwloose from Toolose" ---is that GREAT or what?
