Researcher,
Does your catalog show whether ribs on barrels were an option at any grade level or grade specific?
Anything about ordering second barrels?

In the 1923 cattalogue barrels were available in 26-, 28-, 30- or 32-inch lengths either plain or with a solid rib made integral with the barrel. Vent ribs were not offered on the No. 17. Chokes offered were full, modified and cylinder. Full and modified were standard in 28-inch barrels and cylinder in 26-inch. Other choke and barrel length combinations were to order. In bold letters under every grade was noted "NOT MADE LONGER THAN 32 INCHES." The little pocket catalogues of circa 1929 and 1932 don't mention ribs, extra barrels or higher grades, but do list the Model 17R with the 20-inch riot barrel. One would need the seperately printed price lists to know what was really being offered.

Does anyone have a 26" bbl marked CYL?
Both 26"'s I've seen are marked MOD.
Rob

Tim, what is the overall barrel length of your 17 with the poly choke? And is it the plain one of the vented one? Thanks, Chopper

Chop,
The solid rib gun is an original 28" full choke but measures .018 and patterns beautifully.
The Poly Choke gun in the picture is just under 25" but originally had a vented poly and was exactly 26".
My other gun with a solid rib had a Poly but doesn't currently and is 23 1/2". I think I'm going to have it choke tubed like Ted did although I'm not sure. The whole gun was cold blued (not as bad many cold blue'd jobs but...)so I've also thought of rust blueing it and using it as a second barrel for the other solid rib gun. That would make a nice dove/grouse gun.
I missed out on a 30" gun a while back that would be nice to have. I think it was cyl though which seemed odd. I'd really like to find a tournament grade or higher with a 30" solid rib!
There is a 26" barrel on e-bay but it's pretty rough. It's marked MOD. I may try to buy it anyway.

I got that one, Tim. Gotta call Baker's and see if anyone out there took notes from the old man. I think Sonny or maybe Grandsonny is running the place now. When Stan was alive, he gave a pretty complete job to the bore when he choked a barrel. At the time my barrel was done, I don't think he charged extra, that's just the way he did it. I suspect lengthened cone and a backbore. That little gun just hammers targets. I bought two chokes about Mod and IC I guess, but, nothing is marked on them, a pinky finger tells which is which. I told Stan I was going Ruffed Grouse hunting, and he did the rest. He did blue the first barrel, just a glass bead hot blue of some sort, more than adequate for my needs at the time. Hoping I can get the same work today, what, almost 30 years later. Now I will have to refinish the stock.... Best, Ted

Another thing, Tim. I was looking at that glue joint on the stock extension, and a line from Cheech and Chong came to my mind-"Who cut your hair, man"? Best, Ted

Bought my first M-17 when I was in college in Grand Forks ND in about 1970. Cost me $67.50, I think. It was a B-grade, but the stock had been replaced clumsily. Such was the state of my starry-eyed teenage gun appraising skill that it became apparent only after I got it home someone must have run over it with the Farmall or something at some time in its life. That was probably the reason for that stock replacement, but it also had a kink in the barrel, and somebody had shot some steel ball bearings through it, leaving tracks and a bit of a squared out choke end! It was subtle, but you could feel it from the outside. Someone did a hell of a job straightening it out, as I tested it and it not only shot to point of aim, but it patterned well. Despite all that, it was definitely not an outwardly ugly gun. So I restocked it myself. Shot it a bunch at sharptails and huns, not to mention ducks and geese. I traded it off in about 1999 -- was going to get out of pumps entirely and concentrate on SxS's. Even sold most of my Model 12's, but couldn't bear to part with a couple for "heirloom" reasons. Always swore maybe I shouldn't have sold the M-17....But I found another one on Dec 27th 2006, and it is really nice. It also shoots straight even though the barrel is perfect! It is a standard grade, with a solid rib. Paid $350. Both my previous one and this one have 30 inch FC barrels. Found it in the same shop in which I had divested myself of the previous one about 8 years earlier. The current one was made in 1929 I think.

I darkened the glue line on purpose with a marker, it sands off but I wanted the glue dark where you actually can see it(which should only be a few places. I'm a big time amature so we'll see! Ted, Are you going to choke tube the 30" gun as well? Tony, That 30" solid rib gun sounds really cool. I could always watch it for you when you go on vacation ;-)
