As a US citizen it's embarrassing all the BS that we put y'all through for something that should be so simple. I guess that's government beaurocracies for you "I'm from the government and I'm here too help." LOL!)
Just so you Canadians don't feel too persecuted, my son went to a computer technical school in Canada, it was 2000 and countries all over the world, including Canada, were crying out for computer techs. My son was an experienced computer tech, but could he get a job fixing computers while he was living in Canada (and keep Canadian computer users working), oh hell no! The big government brains said "We desperately need computer techs, we don't have enough computer techs, but they have to be Canadian citizens..." Somehow I fail to see the logic behind their thinking, though I'm sure our laws on the subject are just as dumb.

I think the law here is in order to be a computer tech you have to be a foreigner. This law also applies to manning a help desk. smirk

Well, there goes plan B.
Its just not worth it to import a $1500 gun from Canada to the US. At least not legally.

Rockdoc, I think most other Canadians will agree with me that up until 9/11, crossing the border from Canada to the US to go hunting was a pretty straightforward and easy affair. I used to go regularly down to North and South Dakota for pheasant hunting in the eighties and nineties.

Couple of trucks or a motor home with 4 to 6 guys. "Where are you going? What are you doing? Got any guns? Have a great time!!"

The changes are relatively recent and I think we all understand and sympathize with the why.

Well I did not know that. I have never been stopped leaving the US, are the US Customs doing that now?

Dr Bob, you can arrange to buy a gun up here and have it legally exported to a FFL of your choice by several Canadian gun dealers, one near where I live charges $250.00

Form 6 is valid for 12 months. Am waiting for mine at present close to a month now, have got back in as little as five days previously. Have always used fax with a NY hunting licence and an invatation letter from NSCA. As someone mentioned earlier we are not supposed to purchase ammo while in States,I believe this to be true unless another poster can clarify. Will check it out later on Lost target they have lots good info.Have crossed border pretty much weekly for last 25yrs and never had problem either way.

Mike my guess is it is pretty unlikely you would be stopped where you are but on a Canadian BB I have heard reports (this IS second hand so take it as you will) of customs agents cruising the local parking lots of gun/sporting goods shops etc and then stopping cars as they approached the border. This was for Canadians coming back into Ontario.

If you go onto Canadian Gunnutz, there is an extensive legal section with full explanations of all of this stuff if you search the threads.

My mistake. It's been a few years since I made my last application to bring some down. And as you say, I have got them back quickly and sometimes they have been over a month. Luck of the draw.

Just checked The Lost Target site and was wrong about purchasing ammo, we can buy but not supposed to bring back to Canada without an export permit, so will be carefull in future as lots come this way. Gunnutz is another good site.I used an old ATF form 6 as someone stated the new ones have a box for your email address.
