Now that the Canadian Gun registry is being abolished I have a question. If a Canadian were to bring a gun across the American Border and then ship it to a legal US recipient (with an FFL or C&R)would anybody notice? The Canadian no longer has to account for his gun, and I am fairly sure that the Canadians are not going to ask where the gun is on his return to Canada.

I think there is more paperwork involved for a Canadian taking a shotgun to the US than an American bringing one into Canada.

It has been awhile but it seemed that all I had to do was to get a certificate from Canada and that let me both carry firearms into and also buy shotgun shells within Canada.
What is required for you to bring a shotgun into the US? I don't think you have to have any certifcation to buy shotgun shells here.
Best,
Mike

Mike, it has been a few years since I did but but off the top of my head this morning, you first must be able to demonstrate the purpose for having the gun in the US. US state hunting license or registration confirmation letter from shoot.
Then you have to complete a form from ATF that specifically lists by serial number the guns you want to bring in. Submit that, with a copy of your hunting license, to the ATF. They will take some time processing the application because they are normally quite busy overseeing Fast and Furious. (LOL, just my own bit of early morning bureaucracy humour.
Once they mail the approved application back, you are good to go. The authorizations last 6 months and you can buy whatever ammo you need in the US. You may NOT bring excess ammo back to Canada. Doing that is a whole 'nuther adventure in paperwork.

I need a Form 6 from the ATF to bring my shotguns into the US. I have to put the make, gauge, barrel length, serial number and REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE NUMBER on the form. At the border, the US Customs guy inspects the gun and registration certificates to ensure they match. I also have to have a valid US hunting licence, I get one from the No DAK Game and Fish for non-game hunting (gophers. I tell them I'm coming in for my annual Flatwater Shoot. I usually bring an antique or two, last time they asked me to prove the guns were antiques and I had them looking up Brit BP proof marks on their computer, he thanked me for the education. To answer Bob's question, we do not have to check out guns when we leave Canada, so if I bring in a post 1898 gun, technically I can't do anything but bring it home as the US Form 6 specifically states it is for temporary import only and if I sold it to you I'd be in trouble. If we got caught. I usually stop and buy a couple cases of 28 ga target shells on the way home from Cabela's in Omaha, I declare them at the Canadian customs and pay the duty no problem. I also have to show my firearms licence and guns with the registration forms too, to prove I owned the guns in Canada prior to the visit to the US Mike B

http://www.atf.gov/forms/download/atf-f-5330-3d.pdfI've jumped thru this hoop a number of times to take my shotguns down into the US for The Southern SxS Classic in Sanford NC. This last time, I included my e-mail address on the application forms, and I received back an e-mail "Import Permit". Not sure if I will be receiving a snail-mail copy. Real ALL the fine print and submit EARLY.

So, you fellow Canadians, keep your registration certificates until the US customs realise that the registry is gone and amend their requirements for entry with guns. Mike B

Mike, the issue with ammo isn't bringing it into Canada, it is exporting it from the US, from a American regulatory point of view. If, by some strange chance, you were stopped by US customs on your way back to Canada, I believe you stand a good chance of running into a problem.

Thank god I was never searched during the dozen times crossing border in my light aircraft before I remembered that I was carrying survival Savage Model 24 22/20 gauge in the baggage department!
