It is one of the man churned out and passed thru the proof facility in May of 1969. There should be a quality stamp on the left side of the aft lug. The 4 Rings is a Russian steel type, Izhevsk 50 A crucible steel, 4 Ring Special Gewehr Lauf Stahl SG 1, that was a replacement for the dwindling stock of Krupp/Sauer 3 Ringe Stahl. There should be a steel type stamp just forward of the flats. A thread on the topic - http://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbt...true#Post172682Kind Regards, Raimey rse

Raimey,
Thanks for the info and thread! It's a joy to learn about these guns.
I have another post on a Merkel 200 - can you take a look at it and tell me what you think the marks are in pictures 3 & 4?
Thanks, Patrick
Sincerely, Patrick

From similar guns I've seen advertsied on the net, and assuming (a) the lack of case colors and the thinning blue are from use rather than intended and, (b) it still locks up tight and on face and (c) functions properly, it would probably retail in the neighborhod of $500, plus or minus whatever haggle factor you might want to work in.
That price decrement is, IMHO, more from the use and used-looking state it's in, than a lack of inherent quality. The ComBloc German guns were, after all, made by Germans, even though they got a bad rap early on. And the Merkel name got the big jump in price only after reunification.
BTW, I think Merkels at that price are a steal.

Patrick, I'll have a gander. I agree with DIM that for the money the Post WWII sporting arms are a value. Especially those by the same mechanics that made them pre-War. Circa 1950 there was a lack of components and raw materials and it was that coupled with a dip in quality that the Germans just weren't going to tolerate. So the Russians made additional sourcing lines available to quell a potential revolt.
Kind Regards,

Raimey, Thanks for the great info. Can you tell me what the letters JGT in the below pictures mean? Are they initials?
Sincerely, Patrick
