Money just fell in your lap. Your taxes are paid. The wife and children fed, clothed, housed and educated. All obligations are met. If you have $5,000, what side-by-side do you buy? What if you have $10,000? And $15,000?

Well if money was no object I would opt for the 1st variation A2 L.C. Smith with the stepped side plates. Since we are dreaming, might as well go for one of the two 20 ga A3's made. I know where there is one.

Parker VHE 20ga, pistol grip stock, splinter forend and 28inch barrels. Might accept a few cosmetic conditons to have it. $10,000 same gun and a trip to Argentina. Same answer as $10,000 plus a second trip to Canada. Now as for your fairy tale about all obligations being met - I am here to tell you that isn't happening, even with kids 40 years old. Guns more expensive than $5000 don't get to go hunting with me, too much money to fall, drop or otherwise damage.

JDW,

By chance, that just happened to me, priced in the middle of your ranges. I showed the better half a unique piece at the Antique Arms Show last weekend. She said OK. It is enroute to Charlotte now. I am tracking it like my grandkids track Santa.
I am not telling yet. Our Carolina Vintager's monthly dinner is Thursday night. The shotgun will be here by then. I'll let them see it first and then post pics here.
It is really interesting and very rare. It a London SxS, 2 triggers, straight stock, and ejectors. It is also the only one I have ever seen in all the trips to the Vintage Cup, Southern SxS and UK. The uniqueness part will be a surprise.
The last time my wife said OK to a gun, it was when I placed an order with the Poli family for my 28/32/.410 BLE. She won't say OK if unless it meets her "cool gun" criteria.

$5,000 - The highest grade L.C. Smith, in any gauge smaller that 12, that could be bought in that price range.

$10,000 - A Pigeon Grade 16 (or 20) gauge Winchester Model 21.

$15,000 - A Holland & Holland Mauser Bolt rifle in .275 (7x57mm) or .375 H&H. (Might have to chip in a bit more!)

And, Jerry, I would hunt with them every day that I could!

At 5k, maybe a high-ish-condition but shootable Philly Sterlingworth in 16 and if the money will support it, another in 20, the rest to spend on ammo and hunting trips.
At 10k, no change - just more ammo and hunting trips.
At 15k, the same plus maybe a nice 28.

Throw in a nice DDR Simson in 16, and I think I could be done for a while.

They are in Arizona. The weathers nice and the living is easy. Tell them to print up a sign that says "WILL WORK FOR ______whatever" and set up at some intersection. Your problems will be over!! wink grin
