I don't advocate putting a screw driver to a gun unless it belongs to you and even then it's 'screw at your own risk'.
When I purchase a used shotgun it must first make it past the visual test, naked eye and magnified. Then the 'feel' test.
If the gun has made it past those two then I'm going to measure the bores. Once it's determined that it's passed and I'm 99% sure it's a keeper I probably will shoot the gun.
I've sent several guns back but none that I ever shot.

I offer a pre-purchase inspection for my customers. The level of inspection depends on the agreement between buyer and seller. I usually do not turn a screw. If both parties agree and I have gotten the ok from the seller, I will inspect the remainder of the gun. Standard practice is to visually inspect, measure barrels and bores, test with snap caps. Re: KY Jon's story about the idiot who fired a previously unfired gun and returned it. The seller was something of an idiot as well, to have taken the gun back. I'm assuming he then returned all the buyer's money? Two idiots.

Jim I do not know if the buyer got his money back. When I left they were not done with the deal. The seller had both the gun and the money at that point and was in a very strong position to agrue with the buyer. To me the buyer was an jerk of the worst type. Did what he knew full well he could not do, then deny and lie about it. The seller he did not know the gun had been shot untill he unpacked it and inspected it while I happened to be in his shop. He was as I said pissed and they had to conclude the deal over the phone. I bet next weeks heating bill that the buyer took the gun as is or lost one hell of a lot of money. Unfired NIB guns never come with a shooting inspection as that destroys most of their uniquness. Like ######## a virgin, not quite the same after the fact. I have seen guns that were marred by just putting them togeather incorrectly.
Really all you have to do is ask 99% of the time and a seller will let you shoot the gun one or two times to make sure it works. No need to shoot a 100 to know if the gun works.

I sell lots of guns and get almost no returns but due to people wanting to swap parts and then return the gun, shooting with unknown ammo, ill fitting screwdrivers, and a assortment of other problems with unknown buyers I offer only a 3 day non-shooting inspection. I do my very best to describe a gun both the good parts and the flaws but I have been forced to protect myself from some of the "buyers" out there. If someone can not live with my terms then they are welcome to shop elsewhere. From my website, auctions, and Guns America:
Inspection/Returns - If there is any undisclosed problem with an item I sends to you, please call or email ASAP. There is a THREE-DAY non-shooting examination period. If the Buyer does fire the firearm at any time during the inspection period, the sale is considered final. Inspection consists of external examination, functioning the action by hand to see it operates as advertised, checking bore and having headspace checked by a gunsmith. No further disassembly is permitted, include but not limited to turning any screws or removing any punch pins. Firearms are sold as collectibles and have not been test fired nor headspaced. A qualified gunsmith should examine all firearms before shooting.
The product must be returned in the same condition as received and freight paid. Do not return the product COD as it will be refused. Shipping is not reimbursable. Be sure to pack and insure correctly. A refund will be made the next business day under normal circumstance.

Ken ! Surprised to see you lurking here. Great. It sucks that you have to worry what people will do to a gun.Hope you can stop by on a regular basis. This is a great board. I'm happy with the gun I bought from you and would buy another in a heartbeat. It was a pleasure doing business with you. Thanks
