Save your Merkel from the abuse of these type slug loads. Get yourself a Benelli semiauto or pump which handles all lengths of 12ga shells and all types of shot/slugs. I just made a similar choice for a predator gun to use on coyotes, bobcat, cougar etc here in AZ. If you get a second hand Benelli Nova Pump (I paid $229) it will cost less than the chamber and barrel work and you won't be concerned about beating up the gun in the woods as it is already uglier than sin. Right tools for the job!

That's not a bad consideration of itself, franc. Isn't that why we're double nuts? I went through the clickety-clack stage and now would rather eat poison than be seen with one. When I'm sitting in a blind for hours on end there's satisfaction from looking at my gun, thinking "Yep, that's a good looking gun. You done good."

- to drink cheap beer,
- to fish with plastic rods,
... you can add others as you like.
If it were me, I'd just get some Brennekes for the Merkel and put the gunsmithing bill off to the side.

Back to the point of this this thread: This gentleman owns the gun, he has heard all the wisdom, and should do what he likes. It doubtful , to me at least, that he will shoot enough pigballs through it to hurt it. It IS german aint it? Takes a lot to hurt a German...So Pardner, do what you feel, Its your gun..Or borrow my .416....
