I've been fortunate enough to work with mostly very good editors, who end up making my articles better. However, I could tell a few stories about copy editing. For example, my "tiling machine" morphed into a tilling machine (which caused my farmer friends more than a few chuckles--"We usually call 'em plows!") A friend used the title of a Hemingway story, which the copy editor proceeded to edit. OK if you edit me, but you're going to edit Hemingway? Enough to cause writers to mutter "[censored]!" Or worse.

Wonder how come mine got censored and Gene's didn't? Must be a copy editor at work!
