There was a distinct difference between the Army of Northern Virginnia & the Army of Tennessee. Forrest was in Lee's army only in the sense that he was a part of the CSA. Not many commands to the Army of Tennessee came directly from Lee. Understand I stand at attention when Dixie is played & have the greatest respect for both Lee & Forrest. I am a member of the SCV with two G-Grandfathers who served the Confederacy. One of them rode in the Starnes/McLemore 4th TN cavalry who spent a lot of time riding with Forrest. He in fact had a nice little ride across North Al following one Abel Streight who was tricked ino surrendering without a battle.

It is also noted that none of the Army of Tennesse were surrendered by Lee at Appomattox. Only the Army of Northern Virginnia was surrendered there. This was thus not the official ending of the war as is so often stated. In Fact there was never an "Official" surrender of the CSA. The different Generals surrendered their armies & ceased fighting. Gen Joseph E Johnston surrendered the Army of Tennessee to General Sherman 17 days later in North Carolina. Both of my G-Grandfathers received their "Pardon" at this time at Greensborough NC. If I remember correctly Forrest surrendered his men a little later still in Mississippi.

When I said it was not a "Civil" war I did not mean this in the sense that some have said "No War is Civil". This war simply did not meet the criteria of a Civil War. The Southern states removed themselves from the USA & established a New Government, the CSA. They never tried to Take Control of the Government of the USA, just wanted to be seperate from it. It was thus a war between two nations with their own Governments, not two factions of the same country fighting for control of One Government.
