Wikipedia is not always 100% accurate. N B Forest was indeed "NOT" the founder of the KKK. He was in fact the first "Grand Marshall" of it. The reasons stated for its original organization are as stated here. It is definitely known there were in fact some "Black" members of the original orginazation. The one thing Forest did do was when he felt it had served its purpose & he saw trends which he didn't approve of "HE OFFICIALLY DISBANDED IT". I have studied some of this history & don't have the exact dates at hand right now, but it did indeed cease to exist for several years & then resufaced under new leadership & with New Intents. The attrocities of the KKK which most relate to it were not of N B Forest's doing or by his approval.
There were of course two major armies of the confederacy, The Army of Virginnia & the Army of Tennessee. Lee was over the Army of Virginnia, Forrest was in the Army of Tennessee, so he was not directly in Lee's Army.
It has often been said, "The Winner gets to Write the History", nowhere is this brought out more clearly than this war, which incidently "WAS NOT" a Civil War, there has never been a cicil war fought in the United States.
Another thing you can chew on, Forest freed his personal slaves prior to being forced to. The only slaves Lincoln ever freed were those in Confederate controlled areas, in fact those over which he had no actual authority, his great "Emancipation Proclamation" did not free a single slave which he had the athority to free.
Make no bones about it Lincoln was as big a "Racist" as Forest wver was, they just had some different outlooks. What Lincoln really wanted was all the blacks "OUT" of the US. He didn't believe in the "Ownership" of another human, but felt them so inferior he really had no use for them at all.

fox: bedford forrest is one my favorite characters from history. i have read at least three books about the man...i have been a student of civil war history since i was five years old...zacky where do you take issue with me re: general forrest?

You must be referring to General Nathan Bedford Forrest, Suh!! One of the very few General Staff Officers in Lee's Command who wasn't a West Pointer--and I'd like to think, even as a Damn Yankee (due to location, but my heart is always with Dixie)that both General George Patton and Admiral William Halsey copied his strategy- hit them hard, advance, keep moving- and unlike Lee's major mistake at Gettysburg- lack of proper advance recon--Forrest was a firm believer in the principle that, in today's lexicon, reads like this- "Any amount of money spent on accurate recon and intel will always pay bigger dividends in end results"- Forrest also would have approved of the USMC's motto: "Failure is NOT an option"!! According to some things I have read about both men (to follow), a young George S. Patton, Jr. used to sit at the feet of an aged, one-eyed (lost to the kick of a mule) John Singleton Mosby, a.k.a. the Grey Ghost and listend to his exploits and tactics. It was said by George S. Patton III that his father learned some of his armor tactics from Mosby. Not disputing his adoption of Forrest's strategies mind you, just adding a bit more!!!

Because you said he didn't serve under General Robert E. Lee- That's like saying my favorite WW2 General (George Smith Patton Jr. ) served under "Ike" but not under George Marshall- All Generals and Admirals, in both TO's of WW2 served under Marshall, and ALL the Generals who wore grey served under both Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee. Lee was a Virginian, but he was also a Southerner and a Officer and a Gentleman. Until his costly mistake at Gettysburg (out of contact with Gen. J.E.B. Stuart and poor recon-intel ops) cost him a three day seige, thousands of men who were already wearing out the thin supplu line- but due to Lee's leadership, and his superior Officer Cadre (I wouldn't give you a bucket of warmed over piss for any of the Union Generals- especially Sherman)they still kept the Yankees Whupped for nearly two more years--''
Let's look ahead into history's preview pages-- A major industrial sector Monarchy gets involved with a small rebellious island nation thousands of miles away, extends their supply chain to the breaking point- and gets their Russki arses kicked- 1904-- Russo-Japanese War--
A proud Monarch decides to punish one of her Colonies- not content with the slaughter on Easter Sunday 1916, and the later Soccer field massacre in 1922- they still keep armed forces and fight a bloody no-win battle of attrition against a waaay smaller civilian force that has superior intel and motivation to preserve its homeland-- Maybe England and Belfast Ireland comes to your mind-
How about a huge world power, who watched as the French got their Army soundly defeated, decides to be world policeman again, and tries to capture the hearts and minds of a small Asian country, with a better intel and group op. force who can hide and move within the civilian population on either side of the DMZ at will, who can move supplies freely through Loas and Cambodia and keep that world powerbleeding from 1960 and especially after 8-64 to nearly 1975--Vietnam ring any loud bells?
The North had slaves- they were called indentured servants, and the Dutch who became wealthy from their slave trade built New York City, which is a long way from Deep Dixie and the cotton fields-
The "Civil War' what a misnomer- ain't nuthin' civilized about any war-- but don't tell me General Forrest wasn't one of Lee's finest field commanders--
