This guy was beyond good! Probably did a fair amount of work for August Pachmayer. Well I did it again, I left out one little important fact, the drilling was made by August Pachmayr.

It looks like the sides and the bottom plate were done by different hands. The sides are much better to my eyes. The animals on the sides are all carefully outlined for added depth. The elk on the bottom isn't done the same way. Me too. Regards, Joe I understand your observations, but I do a lot of image analysis for my job and know how if you blow up an image (i.e to make an engraver's signature apparent) that can affect how the remainder of the image appears. It is best to be able to look at the drilling itself to make conclusions about the engraving, second best is to have photographs of the engraving reproduced to the same scale.

the shading on the elk has the hair going out to the edges and this is used instead of out lining and then filling the detail. the dogs and bird have more negative space so out lining is necessary.just my opinion mc

The anatomy of the dogs and fowl are also much better and far more realistic. The "elk" looks like an antlered wolf.
My 2 cents.
and Merry Christmas to all.

Funny looking animal that, also five points on one side and six on the other. Love the rest of the engraving. Lots of time and skill gone into this.. Regards.

I been working for the last four days with Los Angeles city directories and found Mr. Pochon and his son both working as engravers for ville de paris this was an upscale department store in LA, his wife also worked there as a cashier.

I have to agree that the bottom plate has been done by someone else. First the elks eye is far too large and the mouth is not that of an elk. Second and more important an elk of this size would have a lengthy both right and left G1. The G1 on the right side is missing. I don't see these kind of mistakes in the side locks.
Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.
