New guns black pins. That's the guard, lever, and cover plate pins ,others can or should be colour cased. A lot of renovated guns have the pins flame blued because of the risk in loosing them in the blacking tanks or because people think they look good . It is often ,when doing a service or light renovate with out reblacking all parts the pins are flame blued to look good .One thing I hate is to see an old sidelock or hammer gun with the trigger plate blacked ,even blacked hammers are a personal choice ,but not mine. As is not polishing the knuckle after re black on a forend iron .

As a point of interest some London makers whom I will not name , started a few years ago to finish there guns with brushed finish all over. This is the new way ,shows up the engraving, etc. Probably more to do with the fact that there in house colour hardening was awful so they used other hardening methods, or that they were using cast guards and levers that would not black well had nothing to do with it.

Purdey has gone to color-case hardening the toplevers, triggerguards, forend irons, etc, on their new sidelocks.

I'm not sure why they're doing this. To me, it looks just plain wrong.

This Purdey from the '70s shows how they used to do it:

This new trio of Purdeys shows how they're doing it now:

At the risk of being a PITA, I'll ask again. What does the word "tow" in "tow and lime" refer to?

I've heard the straw-like stuff you find in some old gun cases called "tow."

I thought this stuff was used to clean the bores.

When I've seen it, there has been a nest of it in with the gun's accessories.

Tow is flax waste left over from the process of combing the straw. It looks like rope that has been unwound and separated into its individual fibers. Tow is a very old gun cleaning implement. Hanks of it were wound into a loose cord by hand, and twisted around the end of a ramrod to clean the bores of muzzleloaders in days past.

Thanks Flintfan, I appreciate your answer. I tried looking it up on Google and the word was just too generic to find any useful information.
