Correcto-mundo Mr. OWD-- here's the quote page 148 in the book "Hemingway's Guns"-- "Some guns, of course, were always made and sold under the Scott name, and EH's was one of these- a Monte Carlo B, a model introduced in 1891, as competitive pigeon shooting was reaching its zenith. Although the B implies a second grade gun, there was no Monte Carlo A (and the B was available in two grades, or levels of finish. It was the firm's most popular sidelock shotgun, often made up as a pigeon gun, although game and wildfowl versions were available- it was offered in gauges ranging from 10 to 28---- although far less costly than a best-grade London gun, it was hardly inexpensive. In its final year of production, 1935, it had a retail price of 35 lbs. sterling- equal to the America dollar retail price of a CHE Parker with single selective trigger, (aprox.)= FYI

i think the monte carlo name came from a big money shoot in monte carlo not the stock shape i have a monte carlo b and it is a great gun very well made but with less drop the the one in the photo.black powder proof and the stock drop would be a putoff for many buyers ,mine has BP proof but i load accordingly.these are very well made guns.mc

I stand corrected on the Monte Carlo style stock on the Monte Bs. Here's an early Monte Carlo B with a Monte-Carlo style stock:

This one is also an early one and it has the round-knob grip that I see on most Monte Carlo Bs (also has a ton of drop):

Regarding your actual questions (which I failed to address):

-I think the gun you are looking at has fluid steel bbls.

-The bbls on the Scott you're looking at were never tested and proven (or proofed) for nitro loads. That being said, I'm not sure if they would be more dangerous to shoot BP or nitro load out of it. I would have a good 'smith look the gun over and give an opinion on the matter.

-As for the drop, there's been a lot of discussions about why some old guns have tons of drop in them. I don't think we've ever reached a consensus on it. I think old American shooters used to hold their heads up high when they shot. I also think they missed a lot. Other people disagree.

Hope this helps,

OWD

If I am reading the add correctly this gun has 3 5/8th inches of drop at the heel. I just checked an 1897 Smith that I have and it is right around 3 1/8" and I shoot that gun quite well (for me). I am a big guy (6'4"), Should I rule out this gun for me due to the stock dimensions?

The gun is choked IC and Full, which I always thought was a live bird set up, and also has pigeon engraved on the locks.

Thanks for all the info,
CHAZ

Chaz,

I think you can get the gun bent back up a 1/2" and it may be shootable and look cosmetically better at that point.

I want to add that the gun is the lowest grade Monte I've seen. Lovely gun but keep in mind it is different than those that sell for $6000 in the engraving and wood quality.
