I need to get its value appraised for insurance reasons also, who could do that? Not looking to sell, it'll be a novelty keeper/wall hanger that I plan pass on to my son one day. Thank you kindly! ~William I traded a $350 rifle for it, so I don't "think" that I lost on the deal... Or did I? Just curious as to the real value so that I know what sort of rider policy to have it insured for. How can I accurately establish this value as well? Or do I have to send it out to get it appraised? Okay lets try again... Man what a beautiful old gun you have traded for...(looks like it was originally a very high quality gun). First thing I would do is send it to Purdey's of London to be totally restored ...(the sky's the limit with this jewel). Then I would insure it for 60 to 80 grande with Loyd's of London. Your son will be very proud of this fine gun. Until he figures out you left him a pig n a pOke.

That gun can have the stock repaired, a new pair of matching hammers fitted, and as long as the barrels are ok'd by a gunsmith, might be useable.
He might be willing to let you bail him out for $350.....it would go nice with your other old plow horse ? Joe, you really know how to make people pissed off, especially me. You said exactly the same to me when I posted pics of a lovely very fine engraved Lang trigger plate action 12 bore which needs sleeving, to be done this winter by Hugh Lomas.
Mike I can't wait to see photos and hear the total investment....nothing like being totally upside down in a vintage gun.

... jOe, how you can pack so much negativity in so few words is truly a mystery. ... That's not just practiced skill. You're seeing rare, native talent. But, backing up a bit, jOe has a point though he may have gone a bit too far. ... Gunman, you live in Britian and see some really nice shotguns on a daily basis, around here the typical SXS is a beat-out old farm impliment. My point is around here, when one runs across a British shotgun, even one with repair issues it still deserves a second look. ... The thing is, there's no way of knowing what this particular gun's potential is until it gets a good hard look at the barrels from a qualified smith. If the barrels are good, then it's probably worth the time and effort to work on the stock and the hammer. If not, then not, and hang it on the wall. The stockwork is probably something that someone with some woodworking skill, proper instruction and tools can do at home.

Will, apart from what has been said, for an insurance valuation there are a couple of points . Do you need to show a written valuation or other documentation as or its purchase price ? If not then assume it is in reasonable shootable condition and use that as the basis of what you would expect to pay for similar gun to replace it . Look on any of the sales sites for current asking prices. There are 3 values a gun or any other object has, 1 what you would pay over the counter in a store . 2 what you would insure it for if it needed to be replaced ,add about 20%. 3 how much you could get for it if you have to sell it today /now.
A way you could determine an amount to insure .At the moment it stands you at $350 assume you spend $500 on it which will add value so that $850 plus say 30% , that comes to $1100 .If you feel that is realistic then that's the value to insure.

You could not be more wrong...why would you try and get this guy to throw good money at this gun ? There's an old saying "one mans junk is another mans treasure".... This gun is the exception it's "every mans junk".

Just read thru this thread and looked at some pictures.
I see these posts recommending a "wall hanger."
Well who wants to hang something ugly on their wall?
