Have the barrels checked out to make sure they are safe to use low pressure loads in. If not you still could get or borrow a set of Briley tubes to shoot small gauge, 20 or 28 shells safely in it. Hammer guns are a real hoot to shoot at skeet or pen raised birds.

The stock repair is something you should be able to do yourself. Not like you are working on a ten grand gun here. Several here can talk you through it if you like.

Not everyone here has or wants a ten grand gun to shoot. Many just want a gun to play with and forget their problems in life. Others should consider that fact before they show up and run down another mans potential project gun. As projects go if the barrels are decent this one looks like an easy fun project. Even the hammer can be made better with very little work.

Lighten up, load two shells and find something to shoot instead of running down every old gun posted here. The trolls and jerks are starting to make this a sad place to hang out.

One insures assets, but I think the greatest value may be as the double gun that got you excited about the genre- so hang it on the wall and enjoy it as the beauty in your eyes that started you on this yellow brick road.

Thanks all! I was a EOD Tech & in the US Army for 14 years, I have the skin to handle the honest truth.

Like I said, I have $350 into it - so I don't feel I am out much.

Thanks to the reply's here: I do have a plan, and thats to get the barrels checked out to see if it could become safe(r) as a shooter.

So other than the additional cost (screws, nails, wood & varnish) in mounting it to a wall, that I don't have to worry about insurance then? crazy grin cool

While overseas with the Army in 2007, I had an entire gun safe stolen and all the firearms as well.

I did NOT have an additional 'rider' on my home owner policy and the maximum they paid out was a paltry $1500.

I had 15 firearms worth about 12,000 dollars total! To date only TWO have been recovered and getting those two back is a NIGHTMARE of red-tape & delays!

Hence, my desire to have this shotgun DOCUMENTED in some manner. One cannot consult (Or can they!?) a book and determine the value on antique or custom firearms. Off the shelf & newly manufactured firearms are more easily valued - especially so in a REPLACEMENT insurance rider! BUT, the value must be determined to reflect the cost of the policy.

All the best!

Will

Will, there is a cost to education and your tution was pretty reasonable smile

You could have done a whole lot worse. If you like to tinker and learn about old double you have a good starting point. If you decide Old Guns are your thing - well you have started the learning process. And if you don't really take to them, you have a Wallhanger and you didn't sink alot of money into it.

All of the posters on this thread have overpaid or made a few misteps - I suspect. I know I have. And you didn't do too bad, IMO.

Will,
I don't know how familiar you are with shotgunning, but with a shotgun, proper fit is essential. I've pretty much given up purchasing older American built shotguns because nearly all had far to much drop at the heal for accurate shooting. On the other hand, most British and Continental guns were built with fairly modern stock dimensions and most people can shoot them quite well with few "adjustments" to their shooting style.
Looks to me like you may be halfways there to having a gun that you can actually hit what you shoot at with.

Man, how negative can some of you guys get ? It looks like a fine gun to me. If the barrels aren't too pitted or too thin, it's a shooter. A new screw for the hammer and stripping the stock and a little acra-glas and a couple of pins and you're in business. Hopefully you can fine out a bit more about it - good luck - Paul

Joe, you really know how to make people pissed off, especially me.
You said exactly the same to me when I posted pics of a lovely very fine engraved Lang trigger plate action 12 bore which needs sleeving, to be done this winter by Hugh Lomas.
That gun can have the stock repaired, a new pair of matching hammers fitted, and as long as the barrels are ok'd by a gunsmith, might be useable.
Miserable old sod, aren't you. Translation from Britspeak: crabby old fart
