Steve, the problem is that, in this case, I'm looking for an "inexpensive" noncollectable that is worthy of being relined and championed in NRA lever action silhouette. Decidedly the low end of the antique rifle category and going to Tulsa/Vegas or even Rock Island adds enough additional expense that it sort of crushes the whole objective here - which is a cheap restorable shooter.
But I may have to make one of these places one day. I could see going to RI just to ogle the steel and walnut. Something that can't be done at a normal gunshow any more w/o causing serious eye damage, (though no threat to one's wallet).
Brent
You really need to get to Tulsa at least once. You can ogle to your hearts content for 3 days and still not run out of things to ogle. You can't really figure the cost of the trip into the rifle cost as the the trip is worth the cost just in entertainment value alone. I think you are also a lot more likely to find what you are looking for. I generally find at least on bargain each time we go. Besides, can't you write it off as an educational expense? John

I agree with John, your best education is the big shows. I remember my first trip to Vegas back when it was held at the Sahara, unbelievable.
The first year I was just overwhelmed after that it was a learning experience. I cannot think of a single year that I was there that I did not find some treasure.

You guys are right of course. The Tulsa show is something that is spoken about as a trip to Mecca. Just going to have to suck up and do it.

Bye the bye, if anyone has a Marlin 1893 with a 26" barrel that might be a candidate for something like this, slip me a note before I do something I will regret on Gunbroker.
Not to worry, Dave will be compensated. Leroy Merz @ Merz Antique Firearms has a huge inventory of antiques. While he deals in high end Winchesters, he usually has a few others picked up in trade. Might have your Marlin, worth a call. 218 739 3255. Side note: Leroy doesn't give stuff away but he's fair. I picked up a Lindner shotgun from him in Vegas and could'nt have been happier with the transaction. He won't remember me from Adam but he'll remember Yolanda. Tell him she says "Hello".

Thanks Cary.
Area code 218 looks like it is the north half of MN. Do you know what town he is from? I thought Puglisi was the only fancy gun dealer north of the Cities.
I'll him your (and Yolanda's) best.
Brent
Ha! Found his website in Fergus Falls of all places. Thanks again

One suggestion: if you go to Tulsa, rent a table! You WILL appreciate a place to sit down as well as a place to meet back with your buds between ogling expeditions.
Besides, you never know what might come walking through the show and stop at your table..... Regards, Joe

Brent might check this out, I have bought a few items from this seller and his descriptions are spot on. http://www.gunauction.com/buy/10684036/g...mfd-1896-no-ffl
I learn something every day, and a lot of times it's that what I learned the day before was wrong

James, I have had this one on my radar for a while. It's a bit rougher than I want, but it might have to do.
Thanks, Brent

Brent: Doing all my own work, CCH, Wood, rust blue etc., I've rebuilt about 15 of the model 1893 Marlins in 32-40..38-55...30 WCF...and so forth.....I collect these and cast bullets and hunt with them often....I also buy and shoot Hawk .377 soft copper jacketed bullets sometimes, which shoot quite well in the old 38-55 Marlin 1-20 twist barrels which all seem to run about .380 or .381....for the majority though, I shoot my own cast bullets and lube & size these cast bullets at .380.... THANKS FOR THE PM'S BRENT...GOOD IDEA...AGREEDAlso casting and loading for the 32-40, 30-30 and .32 Marlin pre-1899 guns I've restored......and a bunch of Winchesters in different calibers......including 38-55...... This particular 1893 in 38-55 I restored and is lettered with Cody as shipped from the factory on August 3, 1895.... Best Regards,
Doug
