My .300 Weatherby has been my favorite for 25 years. Shot everything from 110 grain spitzers to 220 grain round nose. From Prairie dogs to elk it has always done the job in one shot. 180's always shot the best in my gun. Have a great hunt. JW

Do not forget to consider good ear protection, not just on the range but also in actual hunting. I use Peltor with sound intensifier and it makes me quite comfortable with loud and kicking guns.

Santa just purchased a Caldwell Led Sled for us.....not a bad idea for range work with .300s. Their recoil in the field is a non-issue. My son started using a .300 WBY last season. Now 15, he has taken two consecutive ME whitetails dressing 218# and 208# with it.

I have used .300 Win and WBY in Rem 700s almost exclusively for many years. We load our own. For smaller animals a 180 gr Corelokt has worked well, always exiting with a nickel-sized hole. Both of the kid's big deer stopped them, though. I used the 180 gr partitions for elk/moose and would use them for big mule deer. If I did not have several lifetime supplies of 180 gr heads on premise I'd probably use 200 gr partitions. Best of all, perhaps, is the 180 gr Barnes TSX.

Excess meat destruction is a function of shot placement first, and bullet construction second. I have had more deer meat wrecked with a .30-30 or .22-250 than with the .300s. This was no fault of those cartridges.

While we're chimin' in, I second the notion that you should pay careful attention to the fit of the gun to the kid. Scope eye relief fit to the shooter is critical when recoil is an issue, and many tend to put big, short-eye-relief scopes on magnums.

Once a rifle splits your eyebrow, you are likely never going to be friends with it again.... I speak as one who has "the moon" from a very early Weatherby .300 on an FN Mauser action that I test fired for a friend after he had mounted an early 3X9 variable on it. I love early Weatherbys, but not that one!

The notions that the flat base bullet has a better ballistic coefficient and provides less gas cutting than a boat tail are both wrong! Old myths at best!!

Flat base bullets typically have a lot WORSE BC than boattails of the same weight, but tests have shown that the angled base does, at least in some cases, cause increased gas erosion of the throat.

At shorter ranges of less than 500 yds I've gotten noticably better accuracy from flat-base bullets, especially in benchrest-type rifles. I've found this to be true over the last 30 years with probably 6-7 of my personal rifles, all in calibers less than 7mm. FWIW, YMMV.

I have never heard an argument for a flat based bullet having a better ballistic coefficient than a boat tail in the same caliber and weight. The flat based bullet WILL seal better and give less erosion than the boat tail, but the two effects are essentially at odds with each other, one bullet won't give both. I always like flat base small bore bullets for bench rest targets, but use boat tail bullets for longer than a couple hundred yards on most everything, particularly larger than 6mm or 6.5mm. My experiences are essentially the same as Joe's.

I am amazed at how many still have the time to reload! I reloaded as a young man in the mid 60's to the early 70's when factory ammo was mediocre at best, but since the 80's when Premium factory lines of ammo were introduced it just didn't seem to make much sense anymore[to me, that is].As I got older I would sight in a rifle, see what it would do [most shot an inch or better and let it be, spending my time hunting the rifle rather than just firing from a benchrest and a funny thing happened! I started taking bigger deer and elk than ever before.I realized that benchrest accuracy was only so important in a hunting rife, That practical accuracy was and is all that is really needed but that the hunter's ability to deliver his shot ACCURATELY in a myriad of conditions and situations is of the UTMOST IMPORTANCE! I am not taking away from people who have the time for reloading and benchrest shooting [I WISH I DID!]it's just reloading and the range/cleaning time was always work to me...like cleaning Ducks!I only have so much time now [still working] and hunting and collecting are my passions and it's all I can do to stay on top of them! So to answer TOWNIE'S QUESTION: "Why not load your own?" The answer is simple...If I did ...I wouldn't have have time to shoot ANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
