I posted this on anther site, but would like to see what responses I get here as well.
I have a couple of guns that I shoot very well but are very plain. I'm considering putting some engraving on one or both of them. I know some of you have done similar projects, so I have a few questions.

1. Can guns that have been case hardened be re-engraved? If so, then am I correct in assuming that they have to be re-hardened afterword?
2. Can the original minimal engraving be removed and replaced by new engraving? Does this significantly change the shape of the action?
3. One of the guns I'm considering is a Beretta with cheesy gold inlays on the sides, I assume there are some kind of notches or holes in the action holding the gold in, can they be filled in? The gun also has what appears to be chemically applied case colors, I assume those can be removed.
4. What are the best resources for finding a good engraver to do the work, and how much can I expect to pay for some game scene engraving?

I know I'll never get my money out of these guns if I do this, but I shoot the guns extremely well and I think I would get a great deal of pleasure out of having them re-engraved with something meaningful to me.

Thanks,
DH

Ken Hurst can answer all ypir questions and do one Hell of job of engraving them to boot. Kindest regards, Dr. Dozier sends Email me at jd803walnut@yahoo.com and I'll supply contact info. You might also consider re-stocking with exhibiton wood for a really sensational look

Hey, Dawson, long time no see. First off, I would use an engraver that you can visit and check in with during the process, as well as personally ask questions up front. Your neighbors J.J.Roberts, Thierry Duguet, and a little farther afield, Ken Hurst, would be my choices because they are within driving distance to go over the job in person. I know all three and any of them do work that I would own. Ken is a good friend and is especially helpful and energetic about projects. I visited him last week to discuss a small project of mine and a bigger one for a friend and he is "up" for the job. Bill Murphy

Thanks all. That's two more folks saying talk to Ken Hust.
For those of you who have done such a project, what unforseen problems or obstacles did you run into?

Problem number one is a craftsman who will not turn over the work. Problem number two is the same.

In your area, or any area, Ken Hurst. Ask him and he will send you pictures. Or I will post a few.

What do you want to have done? I can post some pictures of Mr. Hurst's work as well, just let me know if you would like me to. I wish I could say he has worked on a few my my guns, alas I am not so fortunate. Hopefully at some point.

I'm looking for a simple game scene with some not so elaborate scroll on the sides and a head portrait of my dog on the bottom of the action. Nothing too elaborate.
