As to the Model 21.I believe that the big owner,John Olin,would not have a vent rib on any of his 21's.Check reports of the time.My experience with 21's,several 100, is that the vent rib is Trouble. The 21 has several weak points--forend lug and vent rib.

As to the Model 21.I believe that the big owner,John Olin,would not have a vent rib on any of his 21's.Check reports of the time.My experience with 21's,several 100, is that the vent rib is Trouble. The 21 has several weak points--forend lug and vent rib. Page #131, 'Best Guns' by McIntosh: "the first .410 bore Model 21, No 25087, was built for John Olin in December 1950. It was equipped with two sets of vent-ribbed barrels,...". I have read, however, John Olin indeed preferred the matted rib on his guns.

OWD: The only S x S gun that IMHO is more attractive with a ventilated rib is the Model 21 Winchester....or at least that I have seen. It seems the market agrees because the ones with vents cost more than matted. This may be due to rarity. I believe, and at one time I was a competition shooter, that vent ribs do dissipate heat. More importantly is to remove oils from barrel prior to high volume shooting. I have seen heat waves with a vent esP on a hot day. Obviously it evolved with competition shooting in mind. Some ribs on modern guns, e.g., adjustable ribs were developed with POI in mind. Buzz Vent ribs on M21 are great--took the words right out of my mouth. Their value has nothing to do with rarity- it just looks "right" on the gun. The same cannot be said on the vast majority of other SxS's with vents. As well the M21 is the only one that looks right with a beavertail too. Nothing looks more out of place than a Boss SxS with vent, pistol grip, amd beavertail......LOL. I think Niles has a 20 bore that scores a Trifecta in that regard

and Mike I'm pretty sure Bishop recently had at least the receiver reblued recently. I think I saw that gun on Mike Bishop's website a few months ago with the typical 'flaking' so prevalent with 21's on the floor plate. $25k is a TON for that gun! Guess Bishop thinks provenance should crank her up that high. To me a $6k gun.

No opinion on condition or value. Just making the point that it has a conventional rib and the seller claims a connection to John Olin.
