I am trying to find some information for a gentleman who is trying to sell an old hammer gun. The only markings on it are Stanford & Laxton London. I assume this is just the area where it was made. It is registered as " unknown make". So just wondering if anyone knows anything about these markings. I am assuming it is some type of trade store brand gun?

Just communicated with the fellow via email. He says it is a very nice handling/swinging gun so was he thinking of upland hunting with it. He was going to tie it to a tire and fire it with some modern loads to see if it was "safe" for him to use. I talked him out of that so he is sending me the gun to give it a look over. It will probably be about a week before it gets here, then I will photograph the proofs.

I have to agree with jOe on this one. However, I do have a weakness for English stocks and back action locks. It has nice lines but appears to be in bad need of some TLC. It looks like a 12 gauge, if so your friend may be able to safely shoot over the counter Winchester AA Low Recoil/Noise shells or Featherlites through it.

Yes, it is a 12 gauge. Would this gun , if in shooting condition, handle the loads from Polywad or RST?

gunsaholic,Most likely sold by Stanford & Laxton,Ironmongers of Grosvenor Square,London.The Laxton and Stanford surnames relate to a wealthy titled family at one time resident in Laxton, Notinghamshire,England.
One might speculate that because Grosevenor Square is also the location of the United States embassy,a visitor to, or employee of the embassy might have purchased this gun?
