Gents: I just bought an Hussey Imperial 12 bore bar action sidelock, #14397. This gun is very nice considering it is 100 years old or there abouts. It has beautiful wood and is a 7-pin sidelock. The barrels are very nice and have greater than .030 minimum wall thickness. I was told by seller the barrels were of chopper lump construction, but after examination they are clearly of dovetail construction. I have a friend with a similar gun and his gun has dovetailed barrels as well. Both guns are Imperials. I am wondering if most if not all these Husseys are of dovetail rather than chopper lump?? This particular gun is very nice and I think I shall keep it despite the misinformation regarding the barrels, but I would like to know if any of these Hussey's had chopper lump barrels. Any ideas on this matter?
Socialism is almost the worst.

Hello Buzz, got your PM, but thought I'd answer here. Yes indeed I have an Imperial. And yes mine is dovetailed also. I looked hard to see if I could find anything that would indicate Chopper Lumps, but could not. Regardless, the Imperial is in every sense a true Best gun. No doubt about it. It compares equal to my Purdey. The only thing going against the gun is the maker. Hussey is not well known to those outside the doublegun community, thus to many it's just another English gun. A friend of mine who is also a doublegunner was quite taken by my Purdey, yet when I showed him my Hussey his response was...."Who?" and just handed her back.
You have to admit, old H.J. was a rouge and a bit of a crook...but he sure made some fine guns, even if some may have been taken from H&H.
I have a few English Best guns, but my Hussey has a very special place in my heart!
Hope this helped.
All the best to you!
Greg

I have one too and love it. I'll check construction but it's almost certainly dovetail too. Enjoy the gun Buzz. I love Hussey's guns.

I own an Hussey Imperial too and it has dovetail barrels but this does not detract from it being one of the finest built and finished guns I own.

Buzz-
I've seen a lot of Imperials and a lot of Husseys. I've never seen one with chopperlump bbls.
Would love to see pics of your new gun.

I have a Hussey as well, #13325. It is a very nice gun but as Greg says not many people know about Hussey's. I have the #2 gun to Greg's I beleive.

BTW: I've also seen hammerless Boss SxSs & H&H Royals with original, fluid steel, dovetail-style bbls.
Don't think I've ever seen a hammerless, best-quality Purdey without choppers.

Didn't know there were so many Hussey's around. If anyone finds a Hussey leather label I need one.
