It has just a touch of engraving on both sides, setter like dogs in a field. He has wanted a 16 NID for a while, but, most are priced a bit more than this. Where do you find $1000 16 gauge NIDs with no issues? 12s maybe, but the 16s and 20s are getting weird. Happy, because he will use it, instead of "Beesleying" it, like our friend, Thorny. Best, Ted The dogs are roll stamps, it's a Field Grade. Roy's auction reports show a restocked NID 16 sold for $450 in Nov., one listed as 'EX" condition for $950 in Sep. (of course it may have had hidden issues also), a restocked, reblued for $470 in July. I think that $1000 for a reblued gun with a cracked stock that's been revarnished is high, but as I said, if he's happy....

Sorry to hear bout your friends cracked stock. My favorite SxS is my 16 NID that was made in 1947. I have quite a few NID's marked with the "F" and yeap it means fiel grade. $1,000 for an older NID 16! wow, thats something. My favorite 16 must be worth way more that what I give back when. Think I'd throw up a complaint to the seller as that gun sounds kinda rough shape to me. I don't mind some work on an older gun but I frown on stocks with busted up wrists and the fact it was not called out in the description. I wish your pal good luck with it and my he enjoy it.

Most do not understand that doubles are getting increasingly rare in the below $1,000.00 range for any small bore guns. The renewed interest in the 16 has made even their prices take a sudden increase. Unless it is a shot out wreck, a beater or a hardware store gun it will bring more than a grand if in decent shape. I fyou doubt it find a major US made 20 or 16 for less than a grand that was not made be Crescent. Hard to do.
Several 16 NIDs have sold on gunbroker and Auction Arms lately with less problems than what you describe and for less than a grand. I bought two in the last month. One with a set of barrels that had been cut and was clearly listed as such by the seller. The second was over the net from a private seller, a 90-95% gun but the pictures were not that great so it was a bit of a risk. Both were well below a grand. I will also admit to buying a 20 last month that was returned because moths would not had bother eating it. What a sad basket case. For every bargin that sells are several over priced guns that remain. Hard to find a decent shooter for less than a grand.
Wildwood has full retail prices and poor pictures. Most of their prices are max. for what you get. But the bottom line is that if the buyer is happy then that is all that matters. Hope he out shoots you for years with his new gun.

I think Elsie 16s can still be had sub-1K. They are of relatively recent (60-70 yrs old) Hunter Arms guns but the NIDs are also of about the same age so we're not generally talking coveted "time-traveller" guns here.

Ok, I posted on this before but this thread seems appropriate for my question. A local gun dealer has an Ithaca double 20 gauge. I own lots of doubles but no Ithacas. It simply says Ithaca gun Company, Ithaca N.Y. on each side of the receiver. It also has a lightly engraved English Setter (probably roll stamped). Quite a bit of case color and good original blue. The stock has been cut way down to about 13.5" with a crappy recoil pad. The barrels are 26 and about 1/8"long but do not appear to have been cut. The barrels virtually touch and the ends look right. No bore gauge available but the left barrel definitely has more choke than the right. The serial # on the water table starts with an S. Price is $800. He may negociate. What do you all think. Best, Jake PS. One other thing. There are cocking indicators on top of the breach behind the fences.

Jake, the gun sounds like an NID, serial over 425,000? IMHO they are as good as a Sterlingworth or an LC Smith Fields (I will get heat about that statement). The chokes are marked on the barrel flats of these guns, 4=full. I am always cautious about 26" guns. My thought is that 800 is a good buy if it is as you described, but if you can get it for less so much better. The short stock can be replaced or a slip on pad used to get a decent pull.

Offer $700.00 and see if you get a decent shooter. The stock can have a spacer added or a slip on recoil pad to make it longer. I have bought project guns for more and they sounded like a far worse starting point than what you describe.

Well, friend is going to give the seller a call with a complaint about the stock. Not sure what good it'll do, since he likes the gun a bunch. The stock hasn't been cut, and the barrels appear to have always been 28". Keith Kearcher will be giving the gun a once over, (it is filthy) and repairing the stock. Like I said, his other double is a Savage Fox, which has a bulged section just before the choke, and someone's name carved into the stock. I've noticed the pheasants don't distingush between his better shape Red Label and this sorry Savage, they all end up the same, in a game bag. And this gun is a nice step up from that Savage. This is a guy that uses his guns, and appearance isn't as important as function. From what I have seen on stocks with cracks, this should be an easy repair, but, won't likely be easy to hide. I agree, it would have been much cheaper 10 years ago, or in 12 gauge. But, he didn't buy it then. Best, Ted
