Hello, all,
Received for a close friend on friday a NID 16, serial 4496XX, a 1927 vintage gun, I believe. Cocking indicators are present. The gun came from Wildwood, and was cheap, about $1000. Not mentioned by the dealer, was a nasty crack in the wrist, which caught my eye. Friend is only interested in hunting with it, and will send the gun to Kearcher for a cleaning (it desperately needs this) and to see what can be done with the crack in the stock. The barrels were reblued and varnish sloppped on the stock at one time, otherwise, it appears barn fresh. Perfectly suited for his idea of pheasants with Eley ammunition, I made him a believer whacking roosters with my Tobin 16 with the same loads. His other double is a Savage Fox model B, so this is a step up. It is a very nice handling gun. 28" Mod/Full, with a pistol grip and splinter, no cast, and plenty of drop.
Stamped everywhere the serial number is stamped, is a capitol letter F. I don't know what it means, and if anyone here does, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

How does a dealer miss a nasty crack in the stock? Do you think that they missed seeing that when they bought it? That crack was the reason that the gun was so reasonable. They just "forgot" to list it in the descriiption and "failed" to show it in the pictures.
I would suspect that a F is a feild grade marking.

I doubt they "missed" the crack-they didn't mention it. Friend has been looking for a 16 NID for a while and expected some issues at a $1000 price-he isn't stupid. He is happy with what he got, so what anyone else would do is irrelevant. The wood isn't oil soaked, and I'm positive Keith can hem the wrist up just fine for a user gun, exactly what he wants. Some folks don't mind if their 80 year old doubles look, like, well, 80 year old doubles, and are priced accordingly.
If anyone ACTUALLY KNOWS what the capitol F on a NID stands for, I'd be interested in that fact. Thanks again.

If your friend is happy with a cracked stock I'm happy for him. The 'F' might stand for F'd up.

The F is for Field Grade. If it had engraving it would have a number 1 - 7 depending on grade.
$1000 for a Field Grade with condition issues sounds very high, certainly not "cheap", but if your friend's happy, so be it. I'd call Wildwood and see if they'd discount it for the crack.
My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

It has just a touch of engraving on both sides, setter like dogs in a field.
He has wanted a 16 NID for a while, but, most are priced a bit more than this. Where do you find $1000 16 gauge NIDs with no issues? 12s maybe, but the 16s and 20s are getting weird.
Happy, because he will use it, instead of "Beesleying" it, like our friend, Thorny.
