Two weeks of walking the dog in sub-zero morning temps remind me: sometimes dogs need a bit more protection than nature provides. But the dog sweaters found in Big Box pet shops are often hard to use, don't fit well and - let's face it - make the dog look silly.

A few years ago, I bought a macho, sporty-looking waxed cotton dog jacket from Driza Bone in Australia. I got it mostly to poke fun at a hunting partner whose hunting concerns include things sartorial and who wears a lot of Barbour and Filson and le Chameau stuff. To my surprise, the Driza Bone dog jacket turns out to be really good, goes on easily, fits well, doesn't interfere with leg action, and keeps Kerry warmer in sub-zero wind chill conditions. What started as a joke turned out to be a really good buy (the dog loves it!)

So for anyone who's thinking about keeping Fido a bit warmer in cold or wet conditions: http://www.everythingaustralian.com.au/shopexd.asp?id=30&ccode=2330&cat_id=29
