Oops my bad I hadn't realised that me mispelling Purdey would have sparked such a reaction...I've rectified it of course.

Glad to see you are keeping your sense of humour, Tony. Seemed a little tense over a dropped "e". LOL
BTW, That is a beautiful gun. Can't wait to see the finished product. Your son is a lucky boy....he has a hell of a father.

What a great project!

Island lock Purdey, very nice. Looks like it needs a "re-birthing" more than re-finish, it'll be something else when its completed.
With a gun like that, if you were going to have a new stock made for it, would you consider Teague inserts for the barrels?
I think those "lines in the action" that you were refering to are forging lines. Most all shotguns of that vintage will show those forging lines, I rather like them to be honest ;-)
Great choice for a hand me down project!

Thanks Gnomon, I always wondered what a quid was.

Seeing as how Tony says he's going to have its chambers opened to 2 3/4 and a restocking is necessary, it's a prime candidate for inserts, particularly if that's what's needed to get it in proof.
Going to be an interesting project, and beautiful when done.

When you mentioned that the barrels were 26-27 I was hoping you were referring to barrel wall thickness(thous) not barrel length?? Looks like a great project.
Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought stupid, than open it and confirm.

Terry, indeed 26-27 thou thick. So good enough to be smoothed and dents taken out etc. I'll do my best with this. Won't harden but will gently try and bring it back to it's former glory if I can. Lot's of work I guess...but want to get started as soon as it's through proof.
BTW I've heard Nigel Teague isn't doing lining any more. But I don't think the gun needs it...hopefully.

Having had Teague liners in a number of guns over the years, I would not recommend one rush to have them fitted unless the barrels are absolute scrap. With 26 thou plus in the barrels Tony has some scope to clean them up and hopefully pass proof. The gun will handle better without liners (which) kill the feel of a well balanced gun) and will be easier to look after. If you dent a lined gun you are unable to remedy the issue. there are some reports of liners twisting in the bores and others relating to the rusting propensity of two different metals in such close proximity.
Teagueing is a last resort in my opinion. As one of my top barrel makers remarked in a conversation 'it's a good idea but it's not a good job'.
See you Saturday Tony.
