I am what I own. From my parents, the way I grew up, Depression baby, it wouldn't be me to have a decorated firearm. I appreciate the engraver's skills and wouldn't knock another's gun for its exquisite form. It's what's inside that counts. My Elsie Specialty 12 and Sauer 16 are engraving limits for me. Ditto everything else: home, cars, sporting gear, boats, aircraft. No matter how it's wrapped, quality is easily recognized.

The engraving on some of the Hughes/Foxes shown in the color photos in SDH's Fine Gunmaking - Double Shotguns are the epitome of understated class to me. 30% coverage with lightly embellished scroll work and CCH - very attractive.

My Bentley and Playfair 12 BLE ca late 1890s, great engraving, pretty damascus. It was made in the day when boxlocks were embellished as nice as sidelocks. You don't see that much anymore. I have a reprint 1914 catalog that shows this gun. Only their nicest sidelock cost more money.
It does suffer from buggered up screws (I didn't do it).

When I ordered my Poli Anson Extra in 28, 32 and .410, I picked this pattern. I wanted a small gun with a bold pattern so the engraving could stand out.
I picked case coloring for the finish. My thinking was, as the gun gets used the coloring in the depths of the engraving will be protected and provide a nice contrast as the edges go white from use (and they are).

Here's what they started with.

The final product.

The wood was extra. I specified the checkered side panels with tear drops. It's not engraving, but as long as I am posting...

Joe, very nice indeed. You are right, it is not engraving on metal but it is still a work of art and very nicely done.

From what I can see a little careful peening and re-dressing of your screw slots would make a world of difference in appearance. It doesn't even look like any significient amount of metal is missing.

Here are the action detail photos of the Poli. I need to tighten the floor plate screw.

I have to confess that I have a weak spot for engraving, especially the European (I'll call it) deep relief style versus the English fine rose and scroll.
