I am not interested in using any type of grease. It is messy and collects grit.
Oil is probably messier than grease and both will collect grit.... On a Cowboy gun I'd just drill and tap'r and put me in one of those zerk grease fit'ns. If you do decide to go with Mobil 1 be sure and use a compatible oil filter and be sure to watch your shot count....(don't believe those 100 k shot claims).

Jim, To add to your list of advantageous properties of synthetic motor oils, I've read that a significant advantage is the ability to flow well at temperatures below normal engine operating temps (startup). Contrary to popular belief, thin oil works better in engines.
I think that is working against you for gun hinge use as there's no oil replenishment system when the oil flows out of the hinge. Chuck: I've always been a grease adherent for hinge pins and have been using it for over 40 years. I can not detect any wear whatsover to the pins or hooks on my doubles. I suspect there are other approaches/products that will work equally well but I've also always been a subscriber to "If it ain't broke don't fix it". Jim

I'd think oil would migrate towards the wood quicker than grease and be just as prone to collect dust.

I hate to tell you guys this but we use plain old military surplus spec. grease for a lot of our lubrication needs at my gun club. You know; This is the stuff you can buy in pint cans for about $1.00 a pop at most gun shows. I've also used this same grease for hinge pin lubrication on my doubles for many years and never have had any wear problems. Some of the stuff I've seen recommended over the years seems to be an expensive solution in search of a problem!! Jim For those who don't remember, the milky looking GI lube (LSA)is what made M16'a work in VietNam. You cannot buy a finer lube or better corrosion prevention. It is loaded with micronic teflon and that cushions better than MoS. AND it works on everything gun that moves. It's all I use; hinge pins, trigger sears/pivots, choke tubes, whatever. I must admit that I'm constantly astounded, but not surprised, at the concoctions that people smear on guns. And the trouble they go to for crap. The Feds spent prolly a couple $million getting a lube that would make a third rate weapon function and likely many times that bottling it up and you can buy it for pennies on the $million. Just a thot. And, motor oil??? Oh, Boy!! Slop some on and make a nice dust sludge. have a day Dr.WtS

Here you go. You can buy a can of this for around $1.00 at just about any gunshow. The product WTS is referring to may be newer but this grease works just fine. Jim

I wish that I had never ask about this. Hell, the gun oils and gun grease that I have used over the past 50 years have served my doubles well, with no problems. Just was hearing how good it was and thought I might try something new. What the hell was I thinking!

I know what you mean Don, it just gets way over the top......like being nibbled to death by a gold fish..... .....if you still had your Sopwith Camel around the homestead there, you could carry your own oil squirt can on the cabane next to you and give the old double a squirt whenever you wanted.......you know, to wash the dirt away........ Best,
Doug
