How about lithium based greases? I haven't used them but have wondered.

Yes! I use it all the time for lubing cases to be run thru non carbide dies.

I ask about the best Mobil 1 to use, and I got very little response to that product.

I am not interested in using any type of grease. It is messy and collects grit.

Perazzi did recommend some kind of non-detergent motor oil for gun care. I do not remember specifics but I bet some members at ShotgunWorld Perazzi shotgun section would know.

The 2 gun lines that get shot the most ----Kreighoff and Perrazi have their own lube, and its a grease, that should tell you something. If used sparingly like you are supposed to dust will not be a factor. I hesitate to use oils of any kind unless its a dot here and there, the damage it does to wood is less palettable than a little dust in some grease

As oils go, Mobil 1 is overkill for a breaktop gun. It's big pluses are resistance to the ill effects of heat and contamination (gas, acid, etc.).

Clean and relube the wear points often with most any decent lube and you'll be fine.

That said, I like Lubriplate 105, a light oily white grease used for engine building. Great tenacity.

Dr. Ben Loving told me that he designed the synthetic molecule for aircraft hydraulic fluid, that Mobile got the contract, and built a factory. Getting paid by the Government took so long that Mobile combined motor oil additives, and sold it as Mobile 1. He would know if it could harm a shotgun.

I do not know if the additives contain anything harmful to a shotgun hinge. Detergents, dispersents, and viscosity improvers are what I have read about for oil additives. I do not know what is in them.

Some EP additives can etch metal. A car manual I had called for specific transmission oil that does not etch. First clue I had of the possibility, and that manufacturer considered it a problem.

Don, Not sure what is "best" - am pretty sure "best" is a unicorn. Viscosity is the driving (no pun) factor for me. I use Mobil 1 15W-50 (also goes in the wife's lawn tractor). In hot weather I sometimes use synthetic 85W-140 gear oil. Both stay put reasonably well on the ASE90 and P-gun hinge areas (M-21s, too). I prefer either to grease b/c it's easier to clean off after use. Have started to use the 15W-50 sparingly for M-12 and 42 locking recesses and action bars. Like it so much I now use it for M16s and Uzis as it doesn't burn off as fast as CLP. Still like RIG grease for lug recesses on bolt guns, 1911s, and such. Prefer lighter weight CLP for .22 rimfires and 391s. Sam

I doubt either Kreighoff or Perazzi have their own lubrication manufacturing facilities so it is probably pretty common stuff packaged by someone else for their labels and a great profit margin on small quantities. The issue of something really high tech is overkill. The pressure, heat and number of cycles the grease has to withstand in a double gun are pretty minimal and if you are cleaning/replacing after each use the need for longevity isn't there either. Use what you have on hand.
