I have a gallon can of Lubriplate that my grandfather bought 60 years ago that just may last me the rest of may life, if I apply it judiciously.

I use "Owens' Hinge Pin Lube", marketed by Ken Owen of Tennessee and maker of big-bore double rifles (901/877-6853). I have no idea what is in this goo; but I have three small plastic canisters and they are apparently going to last me the rest of my lifetime. This is really good stuff, and all it takes is a "little dab". I generally only use this grease at the hinge pin/hook area, and on the top bite/under lug bolting surfaces; but have also used it inside frames to lub moving parts, as it will not run and absorb into the stock head.

Isn't vaseline with right amount of 3 in 1 oil just as good?

Isn't vaseline with right amount of 3 in 1 oil just as good? Vaseline has zero film strength, but it collects dirt nicely. Any high quality, high performance grease is fine, but one with a pressure additive like moly that actually gets down in the pores of the metal and "plates" over theses microscopic pores is best. A high performance gear oil with moly in 140 weight is also very good JR

After finding it's the only thing that stops galling on Redfield turn-in scope rings; I use Imperial sizing die wax on all my Ithaca, Superposed, Sauer, Model 12s, Smiths, and etc. Besides, I always have some around for my resizing brass needs. Greant.

Jim It's available from skin care section of Whole Foods Market. Jojoba organic skin care oil from Aura Cacia Organics. It has wax like properties does not drip or run when applied correctly adheres well to metal surfaces does not smell or turn rancid plus can be used wood, leather and your own skin. Amazing stuff really. PS. It's modern day odorless "Sperm Whale oil".

I hate to tell you guys this but we use plain old military surplus spec. grease for a lot of our lubrication needs at my gun club. You know; This is the stuff you can buy in pint cans for about $1.00 a pop at most gun shows. I've also used this same grease for hinge pin lubrication on my doubles for many years and never have had any wear problems. Some of the stuff I've seen recommended over the years seems to be an expensive solution in search of a problem!! Jim

The best grease I've seen for lubing any firearm is disc brake grease. It's sticky and you need a Q tip for an applicator, but it takes a lot of heat (more than you'll ever need for a shotgun) and doesn't let you down.
