Would it kill them too dead? Joking aside, the 9.3x74R is a very versatile cartridge. I would not rule it out immediately. You'll definitely want a rimmed cartridge. Most modern double rifles that are inexpensive will be chambered in either 9.3x74R or .45-70. If you wanted a strictly deer sized, thin-skinned game rifle, you might be looking for something like .303, but that will pretty much limit your choices to older British rifles.
