Must be pre 1899 to be an antique for the ATF. State laws can vary.

You can also use USPS

"Unloaded Antique Firearm

"Unloaded antique firearms sent as curios or museum pieces are acceptable for mailing."

As have many, along with employee theft and refusal to honor insurance claims they will not accept guns UPS stores, they have to go to a hub( UPS cust center).

http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/resources/ship/packaging/guidelines/firearms.html

"Firearms (including handguns) are not accepted for shipment via, UPS Drop Boxes, UPS On-Call PickupSM, or at locations of The UPS Store® or any third party retailer"

I have had a problem with the USPS shipping guns, it all depends on the postal branch. The UPS branch I used to use when I lived in Naperville IL refused to ship guns, even after I brought in copies of all the regs. I finally just took my guns to the nearby Lisle IL branch that wasn't run by anti-gun a__holes. No problem there. Down here in Texas a branch in Missouri City TX started to give me a problem so I educated them on their own regulations and then it was okay.
I sure liked living back in the 50's and 60's better (accept when I got sick or needed dental work).

The satellite UPS stores are the "old Mail Boxes Etc." and are franchisee stores, not owned by Brown Truck UPS.........these little strip center weenie outlets are not oriented towards customer service and will not ship ammo/ordnance (ORD)(OMD-R) or Guns--THEY MAKE UP THEIR OWN RULES......they are worthless to deal with...............Brown Truck UPS Main Branch company stores will ship ammo/ordnance and Guns.....but they are usually not conveniently located.........and they trash most of the stuff they ship..........they also deliver business' first and show up at residential deliveries very late in the day, like 0 dark thirty........for high cost, lousy service, damaged goods...use the Brown Truck.....

Bottom line is, Brown Truck UPS is a pain in the butt and are very rough with their cargo handling IMO..........SHIPPING USPS IS THE SMARTEST, SAFEST AND LEAST COSTLY THAT WE HAVE LEFT IN THIS COUNTRY..................PRIORITY U.S. POSTAL MAIL IS FAST, CHEAP AND SAFE......................

The packing is the shippers gig, pack well and the shipment will arrive safe and sound......wrap firearms in old Bath Size Towels, not plastic or bubble pack, then tape the towels in place with masking tape....double wrap, then package so NO movement takes place, i.e. plastic air bags or extra corner small towels do the trick.....Double line the boxes and preferably ship all guns in hard cases, but still wrapped in towels and you will have zero movement...........also tape hard cases shut tight with a good 3" packing tape in at least four places...do not use wire ties on hard cases which won't hold squat closed...........

I don't use UPS for anything and when I buy something from Graf's or Midway or anybody else, I SPECIFY FED EX OR USPS SERVICES ONLY.....

Best..........

I am curious why you advise against using plastic or bubble pack. Would you elaborate?

I have shipped hundreds of guns, both antique and modern, always by Fed Ex Ground and have never had a problem.

I ship and receive antique guns USPS all the time and have never had a problem. I don't tell the employees what I'm shipping when I drop it off as it's really none of their business. However,I enclose a note in the packaging informing anyone that opens it that the enclosed firearm is an antique and exempt from any postal or federal firearms regulations.
Now if the idiots in charge would just permit me to do so with C&R firearms as well I would use them exclusively.
