Jack Cowan was a Tx. Gulf Coast artist who did some stunning duck, goose and quail hunting art. He died a couple of years ago but his stuff is magic to those of us who grew up chasing reds in the surf and geese in the rice fields.

I'm a big fan of C. Ford Riley for his stunning portraits of Southern landscapes and wild turkey, quail, and waterfowl.

I have to agree with Roy as to Thorburn being the best. I recall this painting called the Lost Stag http://www.paintinghere.com/painting/the_lost_stag_12309.html when it was in the gallery in Cornwall. Looking at the original it is so lifelike that it raises the hairs on the back of the neck. Thorburn could paint birds like no other, his deer were spot on but his other mammals just did not hit the mark. Lagopus.....

I am amazed that none of our British friends mention John Gould for birds! Or Landseer, Wardle, the Earls, or Emms for dogs...

Amongst the Americans I do love Frost, Megargee, Muss-Arnolt, Rosseau, Hardy and Osthaus.

I have a small de Penne (Frenchman) of a pair of Gordons on the mantle and a large Tate oil of a pointer. I wish the size and breeds were reversed...

Drew, correctly stated, and I also forgot Reuben Ward Binks who lived right around the corner at the Dodge estate, next door to Frost's house, Moneysunk.
