I guess what I like about Terry Redlins work is it takes me back to my youth. I was lucky in that I caught the tail end of a golden period in guns and hunting. If I'd been born 10 years later I would have missed it. Terry's paintings take me back to those cleaner simpler times past.

Great subject. Even more so as I have returned to school at age 51 as an Art History major.

I always liked Winslow Homer, Lynn Bogue Hunt and A.B. Frost. Frost put you right into the action.

Love those L.B. Hunt quail portraits. IMO we lost a lot when the generations of magazine illustrators stopped painting scenes from the stories and we went to strictly photographic "art" in mags. I even used to love the covers of "Argosy" and suchlike "men's magazines" (which mostly died out before I was actually a man--I read 'em anyway).

One related peeve: I wish that Wolfe Publications hadn't succumbed to the lure of "product placement" on its covers like all the other gun magazines. My earlier issues of "Rifle" and "Handloader" mostly have ONE carefully chosen and shot cover photograph of an appropriate topic, not sixteen snaps of the "stuff" that is mentioned in the issue. "Busy" to the point of manic, like much of the modern world: "Don't make a clear choice; just throw crap out into the marketplace, and hope somebody makes the choices for you."

(I don't like "split screen" TV shows much either, like "24". I may actually be fossilized....).

My friend and former neighbor, Gordon Allen, www.gordonallenart.com When Gordon was 20 years-old, he illustrated Gene Hill's Mostly Tailfeathers. Frank W. Benson, A.B. Frost, and Chet Reneson, especially his duck hunting "snowy blowies" and Bahamas flyfishing for bones.

These two are sitting in my dining room. I bought them at auction and they are originals although I don't know the artist that well..I liked the pictures so bought them.

Drew,British sporting and natural history paintings by Archibald Thorburn 1860-1935 are magnificent.In my eyes they have never been surpased by his contemporaries.Origionals are far to expensive for most folks.I am fortunate to have two treasured Victorian prints by Thorburn, Grouse and Blackcock shooting.Thorburns work can be seen in the book, "Thorburns Landscapes" by John Southern.
When in England, a visit to the Thorburn Museum in Liskeard, Cornwall is well worth the effort.
