There's a Pieper gun at the LGS. It's off-face and way overpriced. It has a huge side-lever safety that's difficult to engage. Can anyone say why the strange safety?

A side lever safety or a side lever? For some unknown reason, Pieper came out with a side lever shortly before his death in 1898. He even filed a patent on it. Why he took this "backwards step" is unknown. The side lever had seen it's hey day and better designs were around.

The gun you saw was produced in the 1890's. There are a few of them around, though not commonly seen. In the condition you describe, at best it only worth $200 - $300.

It's a top lever break open, side lever safety. I use "side lever" only because I don't know how else to describe it. It's a large lever on the left side of the gun that functions as a safety, but has a very long throw to engage or disengage it.

My mind is going. You are correct. Here is the patent, filed by Henri Pieper in Germany on April 21, 1893.
