max, you are probably very close toa solution. Most likely you have a screw of very near original diameter, but wrong thread pitch. If this is so, you can buy a relatively cheap tap (bottoming version needed for short screws) and turn it into the hole cutting the needed pitch (actually, you will have a dual pitch hole that will take the OE screw or the new one). Does the new screw have enough "meat" to cut it to fit the counterbore? If you are handy with a file and have a good electric drill, you can probably do well shaping the screw head for a "hanger."
