Many years ago, I was informed that one of the ways that "poor people: took deer with shot guns was in two methods.

One method was to score a shotgun shell almost the entire way through the hull in front of the case head with a knife. Upon firing, the hull would tear apart and the score line an become a solid projectile with the wads, shot and hull acting as a solid projectile! Thus it was legal to us as a deer gun firing a single projectile!

The other way was insert a broad head arrow into the barrel of the shotgun and fire the arrow via a common shot shell!

Now these "good old boys" still claim that this is what they did to take deer when they ere young! It was a common practice.

In any case, if it is indeed true, then it proves that the Lord protects fools! Lol

Have a nice day,

It's called a "cut shell." See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3M46XVfVOU

And, I'm told that with 410s it happens all on its own not infrequently - they call them "whistlers".

I heard of another method. Back when I was still somewhat of a youngster an "Old Timer" wrote in to one of the outdoor rags & told how he killed his deer. He was as I recall from somewhere in the Applician mountain chain, but don't recall which state. He stated it was common practise in his area that hunters bought
#5 shot for all their hunting. for deer they opened the crimp & poured the shot full of beeswax which held them together, said they would shoot right through a sizable tree. Pressures were likely on the "High Side".
I once worked with a man who said when he was in his teens he decided to make a slug. He opened a shell & melted the shot & poured it back in the shell. This ended up with the shot area only about half full so he open another & melted it in also, then shot it through a Stevens 311 double. He said it sat him on his hiney, but the gun stayed intact & appeared undamaged & he continued to use it for some time afterwards, but didn't make any more slugs.

They used to do this at turkey shoots, but I don't see it working as the firing would melt the wax. Still, it was a common practice (although illegal) for turkey shoots with the shotgun, where the amount of shot in the circle was the determining factor.
