Why don't you measure the bore diameter in front of the forcing cones. If the diameter is correct for the gauge you could then assume that the barrels haven't been honed. I use a simple inside caliper I purchased at the hardware store and a 1" micrometer and always get accurate measurements (when compared to more sophisticated tools).
