So many mistakes were made in the buying and selling of this gun that one hardly knows where to begin. It's unlikely that G&H would take it back now after all this work has been done on it. Too easy to say someone else did the damage. I like G&H, I've bought and sold guns there ever since the early sixties. They will measure wall thickness if you ask and do it in front of you so you see the dial indicator for yourself. One can't ask for more. As I mentioned in an earlier post in this thread, I recently looked at a gun there that was .014" about midway down the barrel. I said that it was too thin for me, the salesman said not a word and put it back on the rack. One must draw one's own conclusions. However, in the case of a gun with .018" wall thickness just 9" from the breech a whole other set of rules must come into play if a business is to remain ethical. I think such a gun is dangerous to the user and possibly to others standing nearby. Bear in mind that I'm 70 years old and have been messing about with shotguns since before I was ten. I know firsthand what a burst barrel feels like having lost two joints of my little finger to one. You look at your hand in shock. I wouldn't sell such a gun without warning the buyer of it's condition. I don't consider myself particularly ethical but I'd have to draw the line there. I can only think that G&H just never measured the wall thickness before the sale and that's entirely possible. The buyer says that he bought it with dirty barrels and didn't even bother to have them cleaned for inspection. This level of trust is just too much. Who was is said "trust but verify". The best reputation in the world is not a guarantee, just a reputation.

nial, the one you had measured at .014 midway, that gun should never have made to the sale rack. Like I stated earlier, it's all about the money.

Hi Doug - thanks for your note.

My main concern at this point is finding the best way to make this into a fine shooter. I bought it for upland bird hunting anyway. The gun missed last year's annual Ontario grouse hunt and sadly will miss 2011 unless I use only the back barrel on this trip. The left barrel is within acceptable limits (minimum .040�). If money wasn't an issue (the horse has left the barn) what would you do to make this work and looking as new? I�m torn between having it sleeved at Briley or Teague lined.

If money is not an issue and the exterior of the barrels are in good condition,I would go with the Teague lining,BECAUSE,you are retaining the original barrels and keeping some of the originality of the gun AND this will entail the gun going through the British Proof House and passing, which will legitimize the process and in the long run increase the desirability and value. I have had the process done to a 12 ga. Purdey HG and a friend recently had it done to a 16 ga. Purdey HG. In both cases the result was excellent.

Will Teague line just one barrel? If so how much? If two grand or twentyfive hundred that is the direction that I would go. The barrels looked nice from the pictures I remember. The lined barrels might add two or three ounces total weight more to the gun which should not be too much.

I too have had very good experiences with Jordan. However, not evceryone in Boston is like that gun room manager!

I don't know how JDW got Turnbull involved in this. Turnbull cleaned and oiled the gun and provided the measurements. No one else would do that. Question one is "Have you remeasured the wall thickness?"

They got involved because they told hin it was safe to shoot with low pressure shells. And as stated earlier in this thread, 1, 50, 1,000 rounds would not satisfy me knowing that the next one might blow up with those measurements that close to hands and face. As HomelessjOe stated "He doesn't have any fingers to loose....". No liability on them, they just want to do the work regardless.

Call it anything you want, it is still a HUGE f--k-up and the idiot that did it should have known better.

I'm heading up to Ontario in a few weeks for an annual grouse hunt and I'll be bringing the gun with me for inspection. One of the guys I hunt with up there may have measurement tools or know someone who does. He's an avid collector of vintage doubles and has an extensive knowledge of German guns. I so envy his 1903 J.P. Sauer & Sohn 16 bore SxS hammer gun. I'm praying that re-measuring provides better specs this time.
