Ole' Joe does know his stuff.
PS. Not bad looking shotgun but I would rather have Facile Princeps ejector from Birmingham instead.

Look at the sellers name. Perhaps he has had a little too much of the wacky weed to know that Belgian guns are not made in England. That or his free public education was worth the free price he paid for it.

A slightly outdated Blue Book says $1975 for a No. 14 in 95% condition, so Joe's not far off. But there's a pretty big premium for anything 20ga or smaller, which may mislead some sellers who don't understand the market and the smallbore premium when they price their 12ga guns.

As a general rule, can one assume that a gun with side clips would be proofed for heavier loads?

They are not a sign of extra proof, but are usually considered a sign of a gun meant for heavy use, eg a pigeon gun.

Considering that I have never seen a gun that had them be loose in that direction, I think it must have worked.
As the leading edge of the clip must be sharp to fit the barrels, it is easy to see that some have been wounded by them.
I still think that they are attractive and knowing the skill necessary to make them, it should be a sign of an especially fine gun.
But as Russ was wont to say, I could be wrong.

I want to think that Purdey is the source/origin of the sideclips, but I can't remember for now: http://www.purdey.com/guns/extras/

I've got a 5 3/4# Sauer 20ga with sideclips. I think they're there so that the gun owner pays more attention to what he's doing. They'll cut your fingers if you don't.

I once owned a 1879 Purdey 10ga. hammer gun with side clips.
