This gives me an excuse to repost the photographs of my Ideal No 6 – it was manufactured 1929-1931, I believe.

It is off with JJ Perdeau, getting the wood repaired, and a proper pad installed.

Some pics of an extremely nice example of the Manufrance Ideal:

My #6 looks almost exactly like this gun, except my gun has a straight English style grip and no ejectors. The engraving pattern on this "Ideal" is pretty much identical to my #6.

Could someone kindly explain how the safety works on these guns? Can it be used by a left-hander?

(Also Postoak your pictures would be full sized if you took the ".th" out of the end of the url.

Eric, I knew, but didn't want to cause bandwith issues for the board. I have be chastised, on other lessor boards for that

On most EE-DEE-AHLS the safety works by sliding the "button" backwards to fire the gun and sliding the button forward to put the gun on safe mode. reb87 has a "Ideal" that works the other way around. The safety works well for southpaws because the button is on both sides of the trigger guard. Seems the French have thought of everything!

Eric,

I am a lefty and the safety is ambi. if you look on my top photo you can see the button on the right side there is also one on the left side. An extra note is the safety is poorly designed and slides under or into a slot in the triggers nad is easily knocked off safe as it does not have a detent of any sort. I understand some decock the gun and close it then bring it into battery by pulling the lever behind the trigger guard which cocks and opens the gun. I have not used this method. The only thing I don't like about mine is the heavier trigger pulls.

Eric, as Dustin says the button is on both sides, but with the Idéal you don't need to
use it. I have read somewhere that the first models didn't even have a safety.

What you do (with care and practice) is load the gun and close it with the lever and
triggers depressed; then, without letting go the triggers you gently release the lever, thus the hammers are NOT ARMED. You can carry the gun in this state, and as you mount it to shoot you pull the lever arming the hammers and having the gun ready to fire by the time you have shouldered it. A lot safer than carrying a closed gun with
cocked hammers and only a safety that all it does is avoid the triggers to move
(unless you have intercepting sears). JMTC

P.S. Jeff beat me to it. The safety on mine does have a detente and makes a loud click
when moved. JC

Sure interesting to see these Ideals. I have a 24 ga that I had converted to a 28 ga with chamber liners by Briley. Great gun and fun to carry. Mine is Serial 55534. Any idea when it was made?
