Again, thanks JRB for the info. Mine isn't nearly as old as Stan's safe and it smells just fine. I believe it's fromn the 1950's or 1960's. Should be OK.

The reason for it was in case of a fire the concrete would give off moisture to further protect the contents of the vault. Consequently my vault will always stink. He also asked me if the doors had a felt lining in a groove close to the edges. I told him yes. He then said that this was to prevent a safe cracker from using nitro to blow the doors off. The felt would wick up the nitro and expand thus sealing it keeping the nitro from going all the way around the doors. The only way I would keep a gun in there is if it was vacuum sealed in heavy plastic. I now have a 4000 lb. paper weight sitting and stinking in the corner of my garage. J.R.B. jerb

That's very interesting, jerb. Mine has never smelled of mildew, and I've never seen any sign of any. But, there is no felt in the door jambs, either. Maybe mine doesn't have the moisture impregnated concrete lining. Does yours look as old as mine? I think mine dates back to the '40s. I know it was there when the new '54 Chevys came out. I've got a book of matches that was given away at the "Grand Showing" of the 1954 models there at Mulkey Motor Co., where it resided.

Stan--Mine is probably from the late 1800's or early 1900's. Check your door edges for grooves about 1/4 to 5/16 inch wide and deep. This is where the felt is put on mine. If you drilled through the floor and came up with some sort of powder I'll bet it has a lining. I've tried spraying Lysol, baking soda, charcoal and a host of other remedies to get rid of the smell/mildew and nothing works. One day I tossed some old income tax returns in there thinking I would use it for a filing cabinet and about two months later they were green with mold. LOL J.R.B. jerb
