I recentlyfound what was presented as a "Peerless" Krag sporter done in the thirties by Stoeger Arms. There must be lots of data available about these conversions, but I've never encountered any. Any sources of information would be most appreciated. This rifle looks to be quite skillfully done and has pretty good lines save for a rather clunky looking cheekpiece.

I have the 1939 Stoeger Catalog and Handbook which shows photos and gives details of the "Peerless Remodelling of Krag and Mauser". I will scan and email the two pages to you if you will provide me your email address.

I have what I assume is a Stoeger Peerless Krag. I have not had it apart, so I don't know where any markings would be. Have you found markings on your Krag? My gun is painfully plain, no checkering but great lines and finish. Plain metal buttplate with peak, plain metal grip cap, nice high ramp front sight, Redfield peep rear. Black forend tip. Winchester style quick detachable wide base swivels as pictured in Stoeger Peerless accessories. Total package is priced at $24.00. With checkering, it could have been built by one of many name stockmakers. I've never shot it, only assume it is 30-40. My gun is identical to the Krag pictured on page 316 of the 1939 Stoeger catalog. I have thought of checkering this great rifle, but then it wouldn't be like the catalog pictures.

I have scanned the two pages as best I can considering the book will not open wide enough to get the complete page. I don't know how to post the photos and can't find any instruction as to how to do it. If anyone wants to take the time to tell a computer illiterate person who is a slow learner how to do it I will do my best. I do have them in my computer now and can email them to one and all who want them.

I'll post some pictures some day when I have my tech support at hand. Meanwhile, thanks for the response.

My assumption is that my Krag was not shot after it went through the Stoeger shop because it is unmarked and doesn't seem to have ever been hunting. I have looked long and hard for a good Krag sporter and this is the only result. I found a G&H single shot 22-3000 for $2600 at Griffin and Howe in New Jersey on the way to the Vintagers one year. I thought it would be there when I dropped in on the way back. I was wrong. Then came Emil's auction and there were no more affordable Krags at G&H.

There's a Griffin and Howe Custom Krag at G&H now for $3000 marked down from $4500 in .22 Improved Zipper. IT IS DESCRIBED THUS: This rifle was made by Seymour R. Griffin for his son-in-law, Deery. It was his favorite rifle because of its super craftsmanship and accuracy. He shot it at numerous target competitions and for hunting woodchuck with his father. G&H trap butt plate and banded front sight with G&H side mount. Leather sling with quick detachable swivels. Lyman Alaskan scope 2 1/2x with Litschert "Varmint Master" attachment on objective lens adds 3x or 4x magnification. Checkered bolt knob. No case.
Take a look!!! Hope this help!!! Jerry

I own a Krag exactly like the 1937 catalog illustration. I have another using an unchecered Peerless stock and have examined over the years a few Peerless stocked 1903s some perhaps put totgether by Stoeger. All but one had smooth unchered steel buttplates. None had Stoeger or Peerless markings.
