What's the general consensus on a good one? It would definitely be beneficial if it were convenient/easy to use.

I know they cost. I don't think that's TOO much of an issue when I count all the vintage guns, Damascus and Fluid steel, I own.

Where to buy it? that's another category where convenience would hold a trump card.

I appreciate your help, gentlemen. This has got to be the best website forum to ask this question and get well informed, experienced answers. Many Thanks - Marc

Jon Hosford makes a very good wall thickness gauge. He's in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

He also manufacturers a very nice mechanical dent raiser.

Kirby Hoyt at vintagedoubles.com had a gauge for sale that was less than $500, new. As he put it, "If it saves you buying one gun that isn't safe, you come out ahead financially." (And that's even if you don't find out the really hard way.) A number of people on this board, myself included, consider Kirby to be reasonably priced and honest. It would be a mistake not to contact him.

Lorne - I've bought 3 significant guns from Kirby, have worked things out with him in the course of doing business, and have had a few laughs together.

For a guy in the vintage gun business I've found him to be an exception. The closest I've dealt with since Jack Dudley in the La Becasse days.

I'll definitely give mim a call in the morning.

Many Thanks - Marc

Hosford's gauge is just about foolproof and Jon is a great guy. He lives near me and is always ready with a drink and a story.

I bought the vice-mount required one Brownell's carries. I found it difficult to use and very frustrating.

I wish I'd spent the $500 and got the tabletop model that has rods for 12, 16, 20 and 28 gauge to be measured vertically.
