I'm not knowledgeable about Ithaca shotguns but out of curiosity is this NID Magnum 10 the same model of Ithaca 10ga. that Elmer Keith talks about in his book Shotguns by Keith?

The first Magnum-Ten Ithaca NID, serial number 500,000 was made for Capt. Chas. Askins and was later acquired by Elmer Keith. Elmer wrote about it extensively --

Eventually the original stock gave up and Elmer had it restocked. This was discussed in his article "Long Shots and Far Away!" in the December 1965 issue of Guns & Ammo, from which I got these pictures.

Captain Askins also owned a PHE Parker ten but I never have seen it discussed in his writings. A fully optioned vent rib 4E magnum ten was sold in Northern Virginia a few years ago. I wonder if it was Elmer's. I guess not since I would have noticed the unique serial number.

Thanks for the info and pics Researcher. I knew the gun belonged to either Askins or Whelen but I couldn't remember which. I wonder if Ted Keith still owns the gun.

Thanks Walter..That makes me feel better..it has a Hawkins pad..the pad is still in good shape The butt stock is original..the serial number is in the wood under the trigger guard tang..The BTFE seems a bit short..it has the screw in the end at the front though and fits the iron well..is the forearm wood stamped under the iron?..Thanks Dennis

The recoil bolt in the FA is proper on a BTFA.
